the same reason you like bleack "ichigo smash with his big falic sword" people seem to like empty plots with men hitting at each other like monkeys.

Because we are men that like fights I guess.
Anyway, I loved DB when I was a kid, saw the 3 series.
For DB I think the reason of it success is the focus on a boy(kids feel like him) and its adventures to find the magical Dragon Balls, and the appeal comes because this boy is super strong like any young kid would want. The additional violence and fun moments that almost everybody likes give it a bonus. It has interesting characters, starting from goku which could be described as lovable and innocent while he fights for justice, Master Roshi, which is a pervert and a super strong martial artist. In summary its the adventure any boy would like to live and introduced us to DBZ.
DBZ focusses more on super powers, transformation, expanding the whole DB universe. Adding more characters, revealing Gokus background and fighting animation, which werent all that good but when you saw guys destroying planets it was like WOW!!. I think they made the strongest characters ever in an anime(Im not sure) and that was appealing to us.
Giving more power to characters while the series went on managed to keep the audience entertained, all of this limited character developement, added to some important moments in the series(Krillins death by freezer for example), a simple storyline and a lot of violence and stressfull momets for the characters made kids and teenagers crazy, and I think here is why its different, and better, to the pokemon anime.
Its a very mainstream anime, like pokemon, naruto, etc... but while it captured us when we were young with primitive plot and things like that, it made nostalgia grow and the love for the goku character makes me go back and watch it again when I catch it on TV, to revive the mommets with a character that made me get from school and turn my TV on just to watch it, and the character that almost makes me cry when he died for the last time in DBGT is enjoyable.
The artstyle, that we percieve as non original, it really is original, from a person that draws anime, I can say Toriyamas designs have a different pattern than most other animes. And the music, was OK and it got in ourselves, like Mario music, which isnt good, but it remains as influential and sticky in our heads everytime we hear it.
After all, it did have a story, and as the story goes on, it turns more like in the story of goku and his life with the dragon balls, Goku turns into a Jesus type character. So, although, the anime doesnt compare to the best there are, it surely has a place in many peoples hearts for somethings good it did.
