Forums - Sony - Is Japan's PS3 Supply Drying Up?

yeah but the original PS3 price cut made the PS3 go from very expensive, to mildly expensive, but expensive non the less, especially when compared to it's competition at the time, games were a factor as well...this time round it's dropping to a more affordable price, plus coming in a new slim design which makes it feel like a new product, not only that but their are plenty of games on the PS3 as well....so this price drop should be very successful, more so than the 1st.

Also, one can't solely look at japan for a good example of how effective or non effective a price is/was, because the price cut increased the average weekly sales of the 360 in Europe and in America...obviously games sell hardware, but when people can't afford the hardware or can't justify the cost of the hardware even if there are plenty of games, then a price cut basically converts these people into buying customers.

In anycase I do see this PS3 price cut + the slim re-design doing wonders for the PS3 sales, not just on the short term but also the long term.

I specifically said that it was different in Japan and the west. In Japan systems move because of games, in the west it's more of a mix, but price is a big issue.  If you're gonna cite price as the issue in Japan then bring no evidence it's not really a compelling argument.

As silly as it might sound I think size is also issue for PS3. PSP sales suddenly exploded when slim version was released and also DS started to sell huge amounts when Lite was released. Japanese people just love their electronics smal sized.

Apples and oranges, one you carry with you to school or work in your bag, one sits in your room under your tv.  You can see why size would be an issue with the handheld.  We don't have evidence to suggest that a slim console makes a big difference.  Don't really have much evidence against it either but you can't directly compare a size change in a handheld to a console.
