Hosting your own server is a positive, not a negative. It guarantees you have an incredible connection while minimizing lag and host advantage. I assume you will also have some slight control over the server and it's options such as gametypes, maps, etc.

I know it is a positive performance-wise, I ran a Q3 DC dedicated old P3 box back in the day. What bothers me is that MS is charging you a monthly fee , yet you have to foot the bill for the hosting. I guess I'm just taking out my anger at having to pay for online play at all.
