Well really that doesn't matter because neither company exists any more. Now they are a company called square enix that is very different either of its parent companies. Pretty sad really.

The only thing that gives me hope is that their larger franchises Final Fantasy/Dragon Quest still seem to be staying on the quality side, and the few new IP's they've been coming out with like The World Ends With You, Sigma Harmonics(though it needs to release stateside), The Game With No Name(also needs to release stateside), and blood of bahaumut. The rest are spinoffs and re-releases of the main series. Some are quite good too, but I would much rather them focus more developement on the main series games and/or new Ips than spinoffs and remakes. There is just so much FF or Dragon Quest you can take until you want something new. Other companies seem to expand and fill in the gap though, examples are Atlus, Marvelous(well the developers they publish the games for), Tri Ace, Level 5, and a few others. So it isn't that bad.
Through the SNES period it's a tie, but progressing into the PS1 era Square leaps far ahead.
Square looses by default because of "Spirits Within".
Anyone producing such crap should go bankrupt.
Which they did.

Hmm... well, through the SNES days, I probably would have said Square. But then Square crashed hard and sold out in the PS1 era, which Enix didn't do. So I'm going to have to say Enix is the better one. They remember what it takes to make a good game, and that it's not just throwing pretty pictures on a screen. I can't help but be worried about the future, though, since while Enix technically bought out Square, it looks like more of Square is coming through the games.
