Forums - Microsoft - Meijer shows upcoming Xbox 360 Elite price drop

Kotaku

"Looks like we have an execution date for the Xbox 360 Pro model, with this shot from a Meijer catalogue due on August 30 indicating the 360 Elite is in line for a Pro-sized price cut.

You'll remember, of course, that the origins of this rumour - Ars Technica's ever-reliable Microsoft mole - are that the 360 Pro is being phased out, taken off the market entirely, and that the 360 Elite will have its price slashed to that of the Pro to compensate. This will leave only two 360 consoles to choose from: the cheap, hard drive-less Arcade and the 120GB HDD Elite.

'Lo and behold, according to this catalogue, that move looks like it'll take place a couple of weeks from now. So long, 360 Pro model. You lived, you red-ringed, you loved.

We've contacted Microsoft for comment, and will update if we hear back from them. If they don't confirm today there's a good change they'll announce next week during Gamescom."

Do you think that this could be their response to a supposed PS3 Slim and/or PS3 price drop? In my opinion though, I would have prefered to see the Arcade be discontinued and the Pro and Elite models dropped in price and then all future 360's would have a hard drive for their new DLC services. Though I guess that wouldn't make any sense because now they could still make money selling hard drives to people.

Preemptive move against the PS3 price cut?...will an additional 60 gigs for $299 really entice people on the fence, provided the PS3 will now be costing $299?

I cant see it having much impact against the ps3, whats the current price of the elite now in the us?

Hmm, na not really but the Xbox 360 Premium always has done well against the PS3 in the core markets in the U.S.A, the Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 there when the Arcade was Core and it was gimped and the Premium was only $50 less. I think its more to do with simplifying the lineup.

Tease.

Well then lets see if Sony can do the same with a PS3 Slim.

lol, who am I kidding.

Nah - but cutting the price of the arcade to $179 - or better yet $149 - in this economy, now that would entice fence sitters. Hell, at that price I would pick up another one just for a spare - lol.

$399.  And it'll have a steep impact against the PS3. ;)
