Forums - General - Gamers and Musical Tastes; does anyone out there listen to jazz?

Yeah, I seem to be the only teen gamer who likes jazz. Can anyone prove me wrong?

3 undeniable facts:

1. Halo 3 is better than Call of Duty 4

2. Smash Bros is better then... any other fighter

3. Failout 3 is BAD

Well I'm not a teenager but I definitely love me some jazz.

I'm not a huge jazz fan but I listen every now and then.

Not accusing the OP or anything, but why do Jazz fans act like Jazz is the definitive form of music, and listening to it makes you intelligent?

I'm not a teen, but I do love jazz.

What types of jazz do you favor, OP?

Personally 50s and 60s post-bop, plus some 70s fusion in the mix is always nice. frankly I like almost all jazz, those are just my favorite types. How about you (or anyone)? btw it's great to see that this under-appreciated music has some listeners in the gaming world...

I tend to gravitate to big band, straight-ahead, post-bop, and fusion.  Lately, though, I've been listening to a lot of vocal jazz.  (How I love Mel Torme.)

Oh, and for those of you who accuse Jazzers of taking themselves too seriously, I direct your attention to this clip of Pete Barbutti's enchanting demonstration of the jazz broom:

HA! I love comedic musicians, I was at a concert about two weeks ago at the Stanford Jazz festival where there was a piano duet between two of my teachers right before intermission, and it was entirely set up as a comedy skit, they were shoving each other off the one bench they were sharing, playing catch with basketballs, etc. all while playing Blue Rondo A La Turk! Sadly I don't have a video to show you :( although there is a famous classical pianist Victor Borge who did similar stuff...

... but all in all I feel like Jazz musicians (especially ones from the 50s and onwards, because by then Jazz was starting to become more than popular dance music) do deserve to take themselves very seriously. Not to fulfill any stereotypes, but I do believe that Jazz is a very intellectual music, and it takes a smart person to truly appreciate Jazz, as it is a genre where most of the gold is hidden under the surface.
