@Artist

I wouldn't challenge him... as I recall he did part of the art and design of the last Ghostbusters videogame...

I didn't really mean to challenge him. Actually I tried to edit my post but I was posting on my phone. Oh well.

Wow ok. You know I appreciate criticism but your just twisting it the wrong way.

twestern - "I'd understand if you were good . . ."

Sooo are you challenging me then? Because if your not then you're just jealous, of my username and my art.

Ugh, one of the things that bothers me more than anything I can imagine is when people use the well I'd like to see you do better... type of excuses.  When someone says thing A sucks and someone else says well I'd like to see you do better it means they just don't have any counter arguments and that's all they can cling to, more or less the same thing when you say well you're just jealous.

So since you want to pull that out, I'll stop being nice.  Other criticisms I was at least holding back and trying to be constructive, but whatever.  I'm really not trying to be mean here, just more honest.

So you say you've been drawing for close to 10 years and those characters for, what, 5-ish years?  And that's what you have to show for it?  There are some people that are good at things naturally, there are some people that can work hard and become good at things, and then there are some people that will just never be good at things.  You fall into the last catagory.

I'm not trying to be mean here, but if that's what you have to show after even five years of work, it just becomes pointless to aspire to be much better.  I see your drawings and I think of some kid who watched a generic after school anime knockoff cartoon and thought he could do that.  He then gives it to his parents so they hang it on the fridge and every time the neighbors come over they pray nobody looks at it.

Now I'm not saying you should stop drawing.  If it's something you enjoy doing, keep doing it!  It obviously makes you happy so that's great you found something you love!  What I'm getting at is you should probably take yourself down a notch or two.

You somehow have it in your head that you're good at what you do and you just aren't.  You're so in love with your work you even call yourself theARTIST and signed one of your drawings as such (which I still can't stop laughing that you signed it as that).  You seem to think that because you have a DA account that that puts you in some sort of elite group of awesome artists.  I'm sure some other DA people even wander over to your page and compliment you!

What you fail to realize on that is they are only complimenting you in hopes that you wander over to their page and compliment their stuff too.  It's pretty much a giant circle jerk.

If you want a real critique on your art, go over to some message board where they don't know you and don't know your work, and say you found a drawing or whatever and want to know what people think of it.  Hell, even say a friend drew it and he's been working on his style for close to five years.  You won't get the DA fake compliments, you will get very real criticisms.

And as for your I'd like to see you do better type comment, I looked around some of my old stuff this morning and found a few random drawings I made bordering on 10 years ago.  I completely accept I'm not an artist, I just use to get bored at various times and draw or try to learn different styles of drawing.  These all look like they were from my anime phase that I thankfully grew out of...

Mind you none of these were scanned since my scanner doesn't seem to like my laptop anymore so they were all taken with a digital camera.

Image 1 - Made this as a poster for a Dungeons and Dragons campaign.  There's no shading and super heavy lines because I later scanned it in and colored it, I just don't have the finished version anymore.  And I'm pretty sure I directly stole the idea for the face in the background from something else, I just can't remember what.

Image 2 - One of the first pictures I made while trying to learn how to draw anime, never really finished it because, well, I didn't want to.

Image 3 - Another early anime picture, not much to say about it.  Meh.

Image 4 - Random DnD character that I had laying around that I drew while being bored during a game (other characters were doing stuff my character couldn't care less about).

As I said, I know I'm not an artist and know there are plenty of things wrong with each of those but at least I know I'm not jealous.

@Esmoreit

Did no art for the game since I'm only a lowly level designer (closest thing I do to art is compose a scene) but I can make 3D models should the need ever arise.

(and I didn't take anything as a challenge, I just *hate* that excuse)

Depends on whether I need some endorphins to get to sleep at night or not.

@twesterm

Wow...really? Why are you taking that so seriously. He just drew a picture and happens to like drawing. That's why he called himself "theartist". I really don't think he's coming in this forum to brag about it and be pretentious.
Anyway I guess it's ok of you to be honest but he didn't really asked for other people comments or opinions.

Ok. Well, I analyzed your comment. You say I'm not good. It'd be pointless for me to aspire to be much better. I should take myself down a notch or two. And then you laugh at my name signed on one of my drawings and then sort of dissed DA. Not only that, you made it seem like I said I was some kind of drawing God or something. I never said those things you did. They are not true. As far as my username goes, theARTIST0017, thats my username, I have called myself theARTIST in real life, a lot of my friends know me by that and it is unique to me because I love art and drawing happens to be a passion of mine. I never compared myself to anyone (I wasn't trying to challenge you that came out of nowhere).

Umm well as far as my art goes, I'm am aiming for something big and hope it reaches it one day.  Its like I said before I'm no Da Vinci. Im Terence Tanyi and this is my art style. I mean when I was a kid and started drawing my drawings literally looked like this.

Well its unfinished but you get the point. Then I kept drawing.

Yeah laugh all you want but I love them. And then I keep drawing, and learn a little bit more here and there. Now today I can draw a bit better . . .

Well if the saying "practice makes precision" means anything to you then you see what I mean. My cousins draw better than I can but that's only motivation to keep drawing. There are millions of artists better than me I know that. So your mean opinions don't hurt me, for I am theARTIST and I stand my ground. theEND.

I never told you to stop drawing, in fact, I applaud you for doing something you love.  I think it's great you love drawing and that's about that.  My point is that you will never make big based on your art skills.

Yes, there's improvement from your earlier work, and if you said that was from a few months ago I would tell you to keep improving and you could be good one day.  The thing is though that's after years of work and your improvements are pretty minor.  You're stuck in your own style, you refuse to change it, and you're stuck in your own delusions that the things you make are actually good when they are far from it.

Certain people can do certain things, others can't.  That's the way of the world.  By all means keep drawing and love the Hell out of it, just don't expect to make it big based on your drawings.  I'm not trying to hurt your feelings and don't really care if you take my criticisms to heart, I'm just trying to give advice.

And just so you know, as long as you keep posting things like you have been, I'll keep laughing at the irony of you calling yourself theARTIST (which can't be that unique if you have to put a number after it).  That's as silly as it would be for this guy to call himself theLADIESMAN.
