Look at the optional accessories picture. The left one is a gold subscription membership card. The text is fuzzy, but I can still make that out.
Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.

No the service is not going to be free and as I mentioned in my OP a number next to it hints at what may be needed i.e. Gold membership also as mentioned above it appears under the optional accessories on the spine of what looks to be the new console SKU.
What has changed is the emphasis on FREE which was not previously their.

Kinect as seen by PS3 owners ...if you can pick at it ...post it ... Did I mention the 360 was black and Shinny? Keeping Sigs obscure since 2007, Passed by the Sig police 5July10.xbox live IS free - you only pay for some features.
This is not strictly about Xbox being free as I think we all know it is free but in a crippled form this discussion is about the switch to marketing it as free as per the new SKU spines link in my original post and the Sackboy advert which also emphasises free.
@binary solo
You make and interesting point in your post with regards to the target audience of the sackboy advert. I guess it is squarely aimed at the female audience and it does emphasise the social aspects.
This got me thinking will these newly integrated social features become available to Silver members? I think that could be a possibility and would probably be a smart move.
Do we know if they have stated if these new features are Gold only features? I just kind of assumed they would be.

The problem of course is they are kinda ignoring the bits that are not. So is this a new tactic and maybe some changes to how the Silver account works or just Microsoft tricking the consumer.
Notes about this post: This post is not about the live service rather the move to advertising it for free when we as members of the more savvy public know not to be completely true. If you believe for example that they may be modifying the live service hence why the have shifted to upping the Free marketing then this is of interest. |
It true! too many idiots don't seem to even acknowledge that Xbox LIVE Silver even exist for those that want to be online on their console. You can still purchase DLC, watch movies/videos etc. If you don't care for Party Chat, playing Online Multiplayer, ability to use Netflix, Deals of the Week discounts etc. than Xbox LIVe Silver is for you. Those of us that want the extra benefits that come with being a Xbox LIVE Gold member will do surely do so. It's people that say I don't have my Xbox 360 hooked up online because it isn't free are just idiots plan and simple. It isn't that Xbox LIVE isn't free but that you have an option to go with the free version (Silver) or the payed for version (Gold). Microsoft allows Silver members to try out Gold from time to time and allow Xbox 360 Silver users to play for up to 48 hours on a trial card (can be found in most X360 games nowadays). If you want an Xbox 360 or already own one but don't want to pay for LIVE just be a Silver because without LIVE at all an X360 feels naked. WWhat Microsoft should do (since some people just don't do their own research on products they are interested in) is put on the box... Free Xbox LIVE Silver Membership... with perhaps a brief comparison to Gold to let people decide whether they want to just use Silver or purchase Gold along with the console.
How our favorite systems are just like humans and sometimes have issues finding their special someone...
Xbox 360 wants to Kinect & PS3 wants to Move! Why are both systems having such relationship problems? The reason is they both become so infactuated with desire while watching the Wii as it waggles on by. They simply want what they can't have.

Not currently. I took this information from the Xbox website
Xbox LIVE Silver is a free service that allows any Xbox 360 user with a broadband connection to get online and interact with the Xbox LIVE community.
