Forums - General - My new toy!

So I've been saving up for a new TV for a while and I finally bought one this weekend.  This was my old one, and while it was good, I've been itching for something that can do 1080p for a while.

So I went looking for Wii Sports Resort this weekend totally not planning to finally buy a TV but couldn't find it anywhere.  I ended my search at Fry's and I walked around the store as I usually do.  I went to the TV section and saw they were having a sale and eventualyl stopped on this TV:

I brought it home and hooked it up to everything and tried my TV at first.  I have HD cable but it's only 1080i which my previous TV could do but the difference was INSANE.  It was night and day how much more clear this TV was and I just couldn't believe.

Next I tried my PS3, popped in The Nightmare Before Christmas BluRay, and the screen went dark.

Whoops!  My receiver doesn't do 1080p!

I had to move wires around and had to make the HDMI go to the TV while the optical goes to the receiver (and did this for my TV DRV) and that seemed to work.  I kept the 360 going straight through the receiver since I don't think it does 1080p anyways and doesn't have an optical out, right?

Anyways, holy shit!  Nightmare Before Christmas looked incredible!  It's like I'm looking through a window it's so clear.

I had no idea 1080p made that much of a difference but I just couldn't believe it.

I haven't really played a game on the TV yet because I've been sucked into FFXI but I'm probably going to tonight.  I'm pretty excited about it since the TV has some True Motion thing that works great for sports and games.

I remember the first time I played on a 1080p screen, the game I played was Super Stardust HD, and I was used to it in SD... I fell in love that day.

1080p, lucky, lol, im still on 1080i, i have an awesome 37" Samsung tv for it though, so its not so bad.

just how big is the gap from i to p?

Just one thing. The 360 does 1080p and optical out with the standard component cables or a special HDMI cable you can buy.

And not to give you any buyer's remorse, I just don't see how a 40" TV like that justifies the $1400 price tag. For similar offerings I would have gotten this one (and am planning on getting it or something similar in the near future):

Or at $1400, I would have gotten a new LED backlit LCD TV or one of the new 240hz TV's. But I did see some pretty unique and nice features to this set. Like the Internet@TV and such. It's mostly the 120hz that makes the difference, not the 1080p part, but even 1080p is a big leap from 720p.

It's huge!  Or at least the difference from 1080i on my old TV to 1080p on my new TV is huge.

Didn't pay $1400 for it, I just use Amazon to link tp things because it's easy.  I only payed about $900 for it.

And where do I get these special 360 HDMI cables?

Is this why you have not been around lately? Enjoying your new tv

^Then I must say that is an amazing deal!

And as requested:

Let this be a message to all those SDTV users ;)

Even 720p is a breathtaking sight when compared to SD. You can get awesome 720p sets for under $450 at around the 32-37" range!

That would be because of FFXI and work, not because of the TV.

And thanks for the link Nightsurge!
