Forums - Sony - Sony's PS2 is outselling the PS3

This is a sales tracking website right? How about putting external articles into some perspective using our own stats relating to sales to consumers. Or is it that you have no confidence in the stats on VGC?

There is afterall a significant incongruity between the Q1 sales being reported and VGC's own charts for this period: http://vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?cons1=PS2®1=All&cons2=PS3®2=All&cons3=X360®3=All&start=39901&end=39999&weekly=1

According to our own stats PS2 sales for Q1 FY 09 are just shy of 1 million units. PS3 and 360 sales are slightly >1.5 million and just < 2 million respectively. So on the one hand we have retail sales and on the other we have shipped to retail. Clearly retailers had a a significant PS3 and 360 stock carry forward from EOY FY 08, so they didn't need to order much stock for a period that is normally relatively slow in sales volume. Whereas with the big PS2 price cut, retailers found PS2s flying off shelves at a rate that was not anticipated immediately before the PS2 price drop, hence the need to order more from the manufacturer to cover greater than expected sales for this quarter.

While those with better appreciation of the subtleties of shipped vs sold to consumer can easily cut through the spin of these articles, the general public will believe that the sales figures quoted by Yahoo and others means console sales to the consumer. Therefore these articles are very misleading and create a biased public impression of the PS3 (note no mention of the 360 in the Yahoo article): PS3 can't even outsell it's ancient older brother, PS3 must be bad. When the truth is that at no time this year has PS3 global weekly sales TO THE CONSUMER fallen below the PS2 http://vgchartz.com/hwcomps.php?cons1=PS2®1=All&cons2=PS3®2=All&cons3=X360®3=All&start=39817&end=40020. The average difference is PS3 weekly sales is about 50% above PS2.

EDIT: I can't see my own attempt to embed a graph, could be a limitation of my computer. Can others see it?

And BTW, if all PS3's don't get some kind of software emulation firmware update some time soon I'll probably be getting a PS2 slim for cheap from somewhere to replace the one I gave to my nephew. I still own plenty o' great games I want to play, and I want to do Shadow of the Colossus sometime, and maybe try to finish Ico too.

You could buy a PS2, a game, and a TV for your bathroom (albeit a crappy TV), and it would still cost less than Rock Band.

That's why.

thats why the ps3 isnt selling to good the ps2 is still in the way. they need to discontinue it and just focus on the ps3 and psp. the ps2 had a great run and its gonna go down as one of the greatest consoles ever created but they gotta let it go...

actually this is what sony wanted.
they make alot of money in the ps2.

I wonder why some of these articles have to keep stating the obvious though. How about a quick short version next time.

Sony will keep supporting it as long it makes money.

I also want them to keep supporting it. If this will happen to the PS3 then it will also be great.
