ROBOTECHHEAVEN said: no it wont win this holiday, why because 2 360 models will still be lower than it, if it gets its price cut. also the games are more or less equal. so games wont be a factor. japan and europe are the only 2 areas where i could see sony winning this holiday, but not a chance in hell in the states. because m$ has halo 3:odst and lfd2,forza 3, and i am sure other hits coming in the fall. also i am sure m$ could do a $30 price cut on all the systems to battle sony's . either way sony will do good if a price cut and slim happen, but wont make a huge turn-around or shift. |
If 360 doesn't get a price drop this holiday season to match Sony should they drop the PS3's price down to $299.99 then they will sell significantly less. Demand for a cheaper PS3 is stratospheric at this point. Demand for a 360 at $199.99 is falling since it's been available for almost a year now. It's also worth pointing out that when the PS3 reached $399.99 back in Q4 2007, the 360 wasn't able to outsell it in worldwide weekly sales even once until it managed to get a significant price drop despite the fact that it had a pricing advantage of at least $120 in every region. Needless to say, if PS3 manages to drop the difference in price to $100 and Microsoft fails to respond with a price cut of their own, they will not outsell the PS3 until they do.
Halo 3: ODST isn't going to move a significant ammount of systems. It's essentially a Halo 3 expansion on steroids. Just who do you think is going to be buying the game? It's the people who own Halo 3 and by association must already own a 360. Pretty much every informed person knows that the game is going to ammount to a ton of software but isn't going to shift hardware. The same is true for Left 4 Dead 2 and Forza 3 to a lesser extent. These are all games that have had prequels already released on the system they are all games that are targetted to people who already own the console. They're potential to move hardware is fairly limited.
In comparison, PS3 has two guaranteed system selling games almost definitely coming this year with Final Fantasy XIII in Japan and Gran Turismo 5. Both games are the first major iteration of their multimillion selling franchises this generation and will each likely move more hardware than all of the 360 games you listed combined. And if those two megatons weren't enough, Sony also has Uncharted 2, Ratchet & Clank Future, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, Katamari Forever, EyePet, Demon's Souls, Buzz! Quiz World, at least 3 SingStar games, and until proven to be delayed M.A.G. is still coming this year as well.
However, the question of what Microsoft will do in response to Sony is an important one. Thankfully, we've already been given a good foresight into this by the same source who leaked to us all the information about the PS3 slim and Sony's "rumored" price drop months ago, the Ars Technica mole. According to the mole, Microsoft's plans for the 360 is to drop the Pro SKU and replace it with the Elite for the same price. In other words, Microsoft's strategy is the "added value" route which is the same strategy that Sony followed through with last year at this time and we all know how well that worked for them. They got steamrolled over by the competition during the holidays.
