Forums - Microsoft - no video, no red lights; broken?

Can't say I didn't see this coming, but given the relative low use, I'm still a bit surprised.

Picked up some cheap HD-DVDs earlier today, finally popped one into the external drive later in the evening, turned on the Xbox and after the fan started humming and the green lights went on, I still found myself staring at a black screen.

Checked the HDMI cable, checked the input settings on the HDMI hub, checked to see that the HDMI port on the display was active (PS3 still pushed a video signal), switched HDMI cables with the PS3, swapped HDMI cable for Xbox component cable, powered off the surge protector to reset power.

Still nothing. The HDMI port on the TV is good, the hub is good (PS3 displays video on the same port), no red lights on the console, but also no video on the display.

Will plug the console into another display tomorrow, but maybe someone has experienced the same problem and found a quick fix.

yeah your graphics "card" crapped out on you. MS won't repair it out of the one year warranty...if you still have some of the three year warranty left...try to force an RROD so you won't have to pay for repairs.

Everybody suggests RROD. That's great.

It is! Why not get the faulty hardware fixed for free like it should be? If MS would have made a more hearty console, or just supported a few of the other well known issues, then we wouldn't be telling him to RROD it.

try hooking it up with the standard video cable or the component cable and see if it now works.  It is quite possible that you or someone else accidentally changed your display settings on the xbox 360.

You can also try to reset it to the default setting. To do this,

To reset the display settings of the Xbox 360 console to the default settings, follow these steps:

  1. Remove any discs from the disc tray.
  2. Turn off the console.
  3. Turn on the console.

Note If you are using an Xbox 360 Wireless Controller, turn on the console by using the Xbox Guide button on the controller. Wait for the guide light to indicate that the controller has linked to the console.

Note Make sure that you use the player 1 controller when you do this. The player 1 controller is indicated by the upper-left quadrant light on the console.
  4. As the console starts, press and hold the Y button as you pull the right trigger.

Note This action causes the Xbox Dashboard to reset the display settings to the default settings. The console then automatically restarts.
