Forums - Microsoft - Carmack: Rage runs faster on Xbox 360

360 prevails again. I am glad I made the correct choice in HD consoles this generation.

Everyone needs to play Lost Odyssey! Any opposition to this and I will have to just say, "If it's a fight you want, you got it!"

PC version for me, I think it would be made better by mods anyways. Well i hope they let out mods for it if not oh well.

But i have a question. Isn't the cores or whatever for the cell (I don't know all the technical stuff) suppose to help with the graphics card to make it run better. Because i remember reading that they were wanting the cell to be the main thing to run graphics as well so they didn't have to have a graphics card? It seems like he is only talking about the graphics card in both of the systems which i thought the cell was suppose to help bring the graphics card up to par with 360. I know he is this great developer programer or whatever (actually i don't know i never heard of him but that doesn't take away from who he is) But if he is this great guy shouldn't he be able to do better than first party programers that work on PS3 and can get their games at 60fps like i think God of War III is going to be running at it but i don't know about uncharted. This is only a question i don't mean to start anything.

They need the SON Y Crack Coding team to get in their and talk to all the "LAZY" devs at Id Software.

What has Carmack ever written anyways ?

The game isn't even out yet, let the dev optimize the PS3 version before saying stupid things

Interesting. Particularly as initially id made a lot of noise about Tech 5 was designed to be equivalent across all platforms - now, it seems it's design is better suited to PC/360 after all.

This may not be a surprise, given id's PC background, but I'm more than a little surprised that Carmack, who I've always held in high esteem as a coder and engine developer, seems unable to match developers like IW, whose engine runs 60fps on both 360 and PS3 and looks pretty much the same on both too.

I was hoping Tech 5 really would be the first heavy duty engine from one of the former big PC developers to run well across both platforms, but with Unreal tech now performing well on PS3 and with a new Crytek engine on the way for HD consoles it looks like id might have failed to equal the competition in the engine stakes.

Nice for 360 owners I guess. If this holds true at launch then its PC for me.

EDIT: where did the 4 disk thing come from?  I thought it was 2 DVDs - maybe 3 at the outside?

Some of the choices they made in the initial design of their engine could be holding them back on the PS3 because of memory constraints, the way they multithread or some other issue that differentiate the PS3 from the PC architecture, whereas IW's engine is probably technically less ambitious. Crytek could end up eating their lunch, though.

Anyway, I read his words more as "we're not still there on the PS3" rather than "this is everything we'll get out of it". After all his exact words are that the RSX is a little slower and they have more difficulty in splitting up the work among the cores. That doesn't sound like something that could translate into a degradation from 60 to 20-30 fps, unless his words about their difficulties are a lesson in understatement :)

god of war 3 has a "variable" framerate, uncharted is 30fps

Rage is an openworld 60FPS shooter with split-screen and better graphics than both of those titles. You should be asking how a third party cross platform game is going to dance the ballero on those games visuals...but the answer is simple; He's Jon Carmack. It's what he does.

Lol 4 discs for 360? How can you play open world FPS with 4 discs?

Really, better graphics than uncharted? Is there a video of gameplay or ingame screen shots? I've seen some screen shots that looked good but were they all in game? And can we see footage of how the game is going to look now?

One play disc and 3 install discs?

But war... war never changes

The four DVDs remark is wrong. I have this months Game Informer in front of me saying its only 2, because of how the game is set up.

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.
