That's pretty impressive, but is that really something to brag about? Beating a console that came in third a generation ago only to come in tenth?

xbox was second.

Good for Sony, it'll surpass the PS1 and PS2 in no time.

/thread.

It's not exactly a good thing that it took PS3 this long to (almost) hit 24 million. Still, for a console who people thought would not make it to 2008, especially considering it is still at a very high pricepoint, this is not bad news.

Considering it is competing in bothe videogame and HD markets it is criminally bad figures

"...the best way to prepare [to be a programmer] is to write programs, and to study great programs that other people have written. In my case, I went to the garbage cans at the Computer Science Center and fished out listings of their operating system." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)

"Hey, Steve, just because you broke into Xerox's house before I did and took the TV doesn't mean I can't go in later and take the stereo." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)

Bill Gates had Mac prototypes to work from, and he was known to be obsessed with trying to make Windows as good as SAND (Steve's Amazing New Device), as a Microsoft exec named it. It was the Mac that Microsoft took for its blueprint on how to make a GUI.

""Windows [n.] - A thirty-two bit extension and GUI shell to a sixteen bit patch to an eight bit operating system originally coded for a four bit microprocessor and sold by a two-bit company that can't stand one bit of competition.""

Doing much better than initial expectations. Now...what's the top 10 list?

I'm pretty sure Sony expected the PS3 to sell way better than it has when they were about to release it.

Initial expectations showed Sony having a landslide lead selling 100 million+ PS3's with the Wii failing to get past the gamecube.

I don't mean what Sony expected, I mean what the media expected. For 1-2 years there were constant articles about the PS3 being a failure, saying that it should be discontinued.

Just to give a sense of what the initial expectations actually were, this thread is a goldmine:

That's from 2005. I bet they changed the tune they were singing when Kaz dropped the "599 US dollars" line

It goes all the way to may 2007. And analysts really thought the PS3 would be on top or at least very near the top by now, with around twice the current number sold in North America.
