Oh and who thought of this: If they're offering PRE-ORDERS for a console, this slim will be huge. Don't pre-orders for consoles only happen before their initial launch due to high demand for the new sku?

It's preorders for stores, not for customers.  So stores have to preorder the console, most likely due to limited initial supply.

I'm predicting that the PS3 slim will retail for the current PS3 pricepoint while the older models get a price drop to clear out stock.

Even if Sony reduces the price of the current PS3 to clean out inventory, wouldn't that mean that they will lose A LOT more money on those current models just to clean out the inventory. That's quite ironic and stupid, if you ask me...

They're already clearing out the stock, in Switzerland there's like 7 different bundles comming out these days (80GB + a game or a movie) priced from 320€ to 340€ which means they've already cut out the price to make these bundles competitive with the upcoming new model.

My guess is they will probably release the PS3 slim alone for 299€ at launch and assuming the old model will be cleared out around October, itit will give them the opportunity to bundle the slim with GT5/FFXIII (depending on the region) for the holiday season.

Here in Italy I see a lot of bundles too, they start from 349€ (but we have 20% VAT here) up to 399€ for bundles with more than just a game, like the Singstar bundles, with game, concert BD and microphones. This was before clearance sales started, I haven't checked prices after, as I was too busy looking for clothes and shoes

Sorry so late with the reply. Thanks very much for the translation.

You guys assume too much, with regards to the price to produce a current model PS3.

The PS3 is basically just as expensive (or cheap, depending on how you look at it) to build as a 360, except that it comes with a HDD, and uses a BD drive instead of DVD. The BD drive is the major factor in hiking the price, and blue laser diodes, and the price of manufacturing BD drives in general, continues to drop on a regular basis.

Because someone guessed that a PS3 loses $40 per unit a year (or so) ago, means absolutely nothing, in reference to PS3s produced today.

back OT: These look 'shopped.

Do we really have any reason to assume they're losing less than $40 per console? Are there some new figures out that we don't know about?
