Forums - Gaming - Is there an RPG with a story exploiting 'this' idea?

OK, I once thought about something silly. You might think it's weird, but did you ever ask yourself the question "What if every people I've met in my life are just in 'my life', and they kind of vanish when I die" or something like that? Haha... I'm sure there's even a word that describes this or a religion that believes in that stuff too.

Anyways, why do I ask this all of a sudden? Well, I've been doing a New Game+ on Persona 3 and I started the Hermit Social Link (the MMO one), and the very first lines talks a bit about the story in the MMO and if I remember correctly it goes a bit like this: "Reality is but a reflection of our thoughts and expectations... But what if we were merely reflections in another's mirror?" So, as you can see, my previous question kind of makes sense with just these few lines.

I'd be interested in playing an RPG with a story exploiting this idea. Does it even exist (yet...!), or it's just in that little part in P3? Thanks for the help!

Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...

The concept you expressed is known as "solipsism", but I'm really out of the loop when it comes to RPGs thus I can't help with that part of your search. Maybe the big plot twist of Star Ocean 3 can be seen in that light?

If instead of playing an RPG you can be interested into reading some literature toying with the concept, then know that solipsism and identity are basically Philp K Dick's core obsessions.

"All you need in life is ignorance and confidence; then success is sure." - Mark Twain

"..." - Gordon Freeman

well I learned something today

That thought is pure egocentrism.

Thanks WereKitten, I guessed right when I thought there was a weird word associated with that concept! And whoa, apparently there's also the solipsism syndrome. I never imagined how bad this thought could be (when taken to extreme levels that is). o_O

Now I seriously wonder why I haven't seen an enemy that believes in this concept in other games. I didn't find the strength to finish Star Ocean 3, so I guess I'll never know if that's really what they wanted to portray there...! Still, very intriguing stuff...

I've thought that many times but don't know of any game for that matter exploring the idea.

@Wass: No, it's called thinking and exploring new ideas and such. Nobody saying it's true, just that it's interesting to think about.

well in baroque reality is disorted and reality is somehow presented by how the main character wants it to be and thus the ones inhabitating it are people who the main character want to exist(though heavily disorted) but he doens't know why since he has amnesia, maybe this fits into what you are looking for.

you should also play both versions of persona 2, by far, i consider them better than the other persona games.

Kind of in FFX with the whole concept of the Fayth.

The closest thing I can thing of to this off the top of my head is My World, My Way. The heroine takes the idea to the extreme, apparently sheis so incredibly selfish and self absorbed that she can alter reality as she sees fit. Seems to be more of a gameplay thing than a plotline. I wouldn't know, I haven't actually played it.

While I was creating this thread, I actually found out that the MMO in P3 is supposed to be a bit like Persona 2 (especially because your character names himself as Tatsuya and that teacher as Maya). I think the few lines up there are also part of the story in P2: Innocent Sin... Maybe I'm searching too far when the answer's just there, or is P2 really different from that?

Oh yeah, plus, there's an English translation of Innocent Sin now? I might as well play them both since I'm into the series right now (and a Persona remake for the PSP is coming out soon).
