Forums - Gaming - Developement support shift to PS3 and Wii

So here is an idea that I have been thinking about recently for a while. First we need some facts* (I consider)

-First there is basically no way statistically for either the 360 or the PS3 to pass the Wii unless this gen goes past 2012 which most believe myself including it will not.

-At E3 M$ announced project Natal, their eye toy +

-Sony announced their Wiimote, like Wiimotion+

-Nintendo showed off their Wiimotion+

-As it stands most developer support for action and fps is on the HD side.

-While Wii support is niche titles(not a bad thing) and a lot of crap and a lot of good things.

-Of the two HD consoles the PS3 has generally closer games genre to the Wii than the 360's library.

Okay with that all said, give or take your opinion I come to this general idea.

Developer support will shift from the current console HD v. Wii to PS3/Wii v. 360/PC.

Here is the reasoning tracking say sales this week averaging for another year since Natal and the Sony wand wont probally come out till next year in the fall the combined Wii and PS3 will lets say be around 92M and the 360 at 38M.

Since the Wii and PS3 will have the most similar control schemes with the combined largest install base developers would shift support more to those two.

The 360 might pull a Wii with their natal or they might just fail as with their HD addition.

That's my idea discuss.

Or developers would be so confused on what to support and just use the current control schemes bc i know a lot of 360 and PS3 fans that just would never use the new controllers.

"Like you know"

i don't see a drastic difference between the 360 and ps3 libraries currently, at least not enough to say the ps3 is closer tot he wii than the 360.

That being said, I can see support switching this way, at least with wii games as the sony wand is probably closer to the wii mote than natal will be, but we will just have to wait and see what happens. It is too far away at this point.

yes i agree on waiting and seeing but i bet the smart developers have already thought about this an are determining to continue the course or a wait and see approach.

"Like you know"

My biggest fear is the lowest common denominator factor; meaning, the good Wii games get ported to the PS3 (and maybe 360, but I still can't see how without buttons), but a bunch of the crap games get ported, too.

Its possible I guess.  I think that developers will stick to what they have in the past, with the only change being the Wii getting more attention.

I can see the ps3 getting some *Wii love* in the future.

It depends on the developers. In Japan it is going to be PS3 and Wii getting all the suppory but in the west itll still be HD vs. Wii. With Wii rising in support as time goes on.

"Pier was a chef, a gifted and respected chef who made millions selling his dishes to the residents of New York City and Boston, he even had a famous jingle playing in those cities that everyone knew by heart. He also had a restaurant in Los Angeles, but not expecting LA to have such a massive population he only used his name on that restaurant and left it to his least capable and cheapest chefs. While his New York restaurant sold kobe beef for $100 and his Boston restaurant sold lobster for $50, his LA restaurant sold cheap hotdogs for $30. Initially these hot dogs sold fairly well because residents of los angeles were starving for good food and hoped that the famous name would denote a high quality, but most were disappointed with what they ate. Seeing the success of his cheap hot dogs in LA, Pier thought "why bother giving Los Angeles quality meats when I can oversell them on cheap hotdogs forever, and since I don't care about the product anyways, why bother advertising them? So Pier continued to only sell cheap hotdogs in LA and was surprised to see that they no longer sold. Pier's conclusion? Residents of Los Angeles don't like food."

"The so-called "hardcore" gamer is a marketing brainwashed, innovation shunting, self-righteous idiot who pays videogame makers far too much money than what is delivered."

If development for the PS3 and Wii were similar, I could see possibly see this. But its not.

I don't see things changing that much with development resources for the rest of this gen. The motion controllers may make things a bit more interesting, but probably not in a major way.

In order to justify the development of HD games most third party publishers have to release these games to the PS3, XBox 360 and PC; and if they're developing a game for an add on device (regardless of the platform) in most cases the game has to be playable using the standard default controller. When you combine these two things together you will probably come to the realization that any game made for these add ons will (probably) need to support a conventional controller, project Natal, Sony's wand controller and a keyboard and mouse set up; which essentially makes it unlikely that many third party developers will support the add ons, and even if they do few will produce games which make use of them to do anything meaningful.
