Woman Wins Lawsuit, Gauze Left Inside Stomach
Peter D'Oench
Reporting
A Broward County jury on Tuesday awarded her more than $2.4-million in a malpractice suit, which included punitive damages, claiming she is permanently disabled.
Doctors at Memorial Hospital West performed a Caesarean section on Karlene Chambers on September 11, 2001, the day the Twin Towers in New York City were attacked by terrorists.
The suit claimed that two weeks later, the first-grade school teacher was readmitted to another hospital and placed in intensive care for growing abdominal pains.
A CAT scan revealed that surgeons who performed her Caesarean surgery left a foot-long sponge in her body.
Her lawsuit claimed that a dangerous infection caused permanent disability to her abdomen and uterus. Her attorney, Crane Johnstone, said she will no longer be able to bear children.
