Forums - Microsoft - New Dashboard Commercials Bring Ad Breaks To Your 360

There is no Flash or Silverlight support in the current Xbox dashboard (NXE).  The ads you see have been there since NXE shipped and are just streaming video.  The interactive ads (navigate to a different page with some controls) are a proprietary dashboard extension format.  The same advertizing formats (images, videos, interative experiences) were, for the most part, supported in the old dashboard - though I don't think audio was supported there - and (IMO) the ads felt less prominent.

1. I LIVE IN THE US. I DO NOT GET/WATCH CHANNELS IN THE UK. I WAS JOKING.
2. I haven't gotten to play my 360 for about 4 weeks, because my brother took it on a trip... I got it in '08.
3. I just think it is ethically wrong. Paying is paying. It feels like I'm being cheated... Unfortunately there's not much I can do about it. Think how much faster they could make downloads with the bandwith they use for advertising... And no I don't think they're fast enough when I have to wait 5 - 10 min. to download 3 GH:WT songs...

BBC is rebroadcast by most major US cable and satellite providers.  It generally provides a less biased view of US politics and events if only because it's not from the US (where you have some very left-leaning networks and some very right-leaning networks).

Cable television costs money and is full of intrusive non-skippable ads - and at the same time it costs far more than xbox live.  Yes, xbox live is partially advertizing funded - and partially subscriber funded - just like many, many other services.

The bandwidth of the ads is insignificant compared to downlaods.  You are comparing what is likely a 500kb video file to a game/medie download generally in the range of 250mb-6gb.

What a load of bullshit.

I could understand Nintendo and Sony doing this because their services are FREE.

People who pay $50 a year, should not have to deal with ads...

Silver users, on the other hand, I can understand, because that is still free...

Maybe that will help us get better online on PSWii...

But MS is ridiculous...

Pretty much it's getting harder and harder each day for 360 fanboys to defend that 50 dolla' pricetag.the NXE is supposed to be

your personal space.:/

Your bitching about something you never noticed. You dont have to watch  and doesnt pop up full screen like PSN. It's intergrated into the actual normal windows. LOL.

It's like complaining that Corranation Street is on BBC 1. You know what, filck the channel you have a choice to watch it. LOL

PSN is FREE. XBL is Paid for. Any comparisons of that type are moot.

What the hell Is BBC?IS it some secret TV channel that only Europeans get? And I don't know what Corranation street is, so I'm lost in your comparison. If it was free to use this site, but you had to paying a yearly fee to be on the forums, and then they started putting ads on all user's pages, even the users who paid, wouldn't you be a tad bit upset with that?

Here's an example (Note that I don't even use this site anymore):

Myspace hosts your webpage. Myspace is free, but much more limited. Myspace has their ads that you can't get rid of.

GoDaddy lets you host your page for a yearly fee, and you can put whatever you want on it, no ads (or you can put your own on there, it's your choice).

What if GoDaddy started forcing it's clients to put third-party ads on their pages, keeping the same fee, and not giving out a slice of the pie? Needless to say, some people would be a tad bit upset. Myspace is PSN, and GoDaddy is XBL.

Dude you got issues. BBC is UK number 1 TV channel. The ads on Live dont even hinder you at ALL. Like everyone has said. Noone has mentioned anyhting on here for months, and they have been there for months. Very clealry it hasn't bothered ANYONE. IT doesn't just pop up out of the blue. IT is in it's designated window. As you scroll through the windows, you just keep scrolling if you dont want to watch it. Simples. No hinderence or annoyance at ALL. And as the last few months have shown, noone even you have not been bothered enough to write a thread about it. Unless you bought your 360 yesterday?

This is your first warning

God you must have a shit internet connection then.  Cause I can download a set of Guitar Hero songs under 1 minute easy.  And I can download Demos (1gb or more) in around 8 minutes

Actually I have Verizon FiOS (@20mbits/sec to be exact). It's great for regular internet, cable and PSN, but for my Wii it's on-and-off, mostly good, but when it sucks, it sucks BAD. Then for 360 it just sucks at downloading, Period. It takes about 5 seconds for it to move up 1% I can play online co-op or competitive games fine, but Downloading XBL profiles take painfully long as well, estimating about 5 minutes for one fucking profile. ;_;

It has to be the service provider then, not the service. I have Road Runner around 30 down, and downloads from XBLA are screaming fast. PSN on the other hand, is slow as a snail.

Xbox Live is not exactly expensive.
