Xbox 360 Dev Kit with 1GB RAM - Exclusive Pictures

We received exclusive pictures of an Xbox 360 development kit with 1GB of RAM (as opposed to the 512MB found into retail consoles and dev kits until now). It was already rumoured/announced a while ago that new development kits would get 1GB of RAM to give developers more flexibility and use all the power of retail Xbox360s while still running debug tools.

Today we offer you the first pictures of this 'new' device.

While most might expect the extra RAM would just be higher capacity chips on the motherboard, it's not. The extra 512MB comes in the new sidecar. The sidecar is the addon device for dev kits you've probably seen before used for dvd emulation and pix ports.

What you can see on the pictures below is just the 512MB-addon taken from inside the new devkit sidecar and modified/wired to be connected as standalone to a dev kit without the rest of the sidecar.

The dev kit itself is an XNA prototype with jasper-based motherboard and because it has been modified to work with the 512MB-addon without the rest of the sidecar we'll dub it 'Frankie the 1GB XNA' ;)

Xmas 2012 and you'll have a new Nintendo console.

The biggest things holding back graphical development for the 360 have been developers using the unreal engine as a crutch and the problem stated in the op where developers had to use the consoles ram to run their tool kits.

With the new engine specifically tailored for the 360 that MS released and these new 1gb 360 dev kits I'm thinking were going to see some really big graphical developments for future 360 games.

It's going to be interesting how the graphical comparison between the PS3 and the 360 holds up in 2010 and beyond.

Should have done this a while ago. Seems like a no brainer.

The upgrade is for dev kits only, and there's very little chance you'll see a ram increase in your own 360.  The reason they are doing this is because you can't get the full power out of a system if you have to run diagnostic tools in the background.  Basically the only thing that will come of this is slight improvements to the games you play.  This has been done for many other consoles before and has never led to upgrades for any of them except, perhaps, the N64, and even that's arguable.

That would be nice...

We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that they [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine and half years? It's a learning process. - SCEI president Kaz Hirai

It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. - Epic Games president Mike Capps

We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games. - Activision CEO Bobby Kotick
