I noticed on Amazon both the 20gb and Cores are sold out. Could this mean that new models are in the pipe? I haven't been following this too closely.

This doesn't surprise me.
The Pro is probably sold out because of H3. It seems to be pretty common right now, I've heard of several stores selling out of them. MS is probably also choking the supply line right now to prepare for the HDMI/65nm units.
The Core is going to be replaced by the Arcade.

I noticed premiums and cores were not in stock at target over the last couple of weekends. I suspect they are letting the channel clear of current inventory and are shipping new holiday bundles. The only stock I've seen is the Halo 3 special edition. That's just my area, though, and YMMV.
With all the talk bout the 40gb PS3, I'm surprised nobody is talking about this. I'm guessing MS is waiting for Sony to make its move, then MS will make a counter move.
If both the Core and Premium are selling out on Amazon and in certain stores, could that have a negative impact on 360 hardware sales (until the new models are out), given the higher price of the Elite?
We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that they [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine and half years? It's a learning process. - SCEI president Kaz Hirai
It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. - Epic Games president Mike Capps
We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games. - Activision CEO Bobby Kotick

MS wanted to be as silent as possible with this update to prevent people from easily going in to distinguish the 65nm/HDMI units from the old RRoD-monsters to avoid getting stuck with unsellable inventory in retail stores.
Which is why the new unit boxes are visually identical and one has to browse small text on the back to know if it is an HDMI unit or not.

Well, there are multiple reasons/possibilities.
- Halo 3
- Killing the core, maybe to make way for another SKU
- Getting rid of the old stock to make way for the Falcons'
- Getting rid of stock for holiday bundles
I think microsoft will always counter a price drop look back in history they did it with the PS2 and Xbox and a month ago it was the same. So it's possible that they will counter it with a new SKU I think the falcon models will be cheaper so it's the perfectly possible.

They had to counter back in those days because they weren't the market leader.
