I like how they introduce flashbacks in MGS4, just press circle during a cut scene that mentions previous games, and a flashback will occur, involving actual cut scenes from MGS1 and MGS2. Nice!

Sorry, just had to do it. :P

But yeah, the flashbacks idea sounds pretty cool. It will really help out all the noobs to the series. It may also increase sales, as people who don't know the story won't have any reason not to check it out.
