Forums - Gaming - It's a different game this generation!

When I look at these forums, I hear a lot of "the 360 is mass market price" or "the ps3 just needs a pricecut."  Then these comments are often followed by a rant about how historically after these events happen there is a huge impact on the consoles sales.  While this is true, there is something different this generation that makes it harder to gauge how price cuts and mass market pricing can affect sales.

That something different is mulitple sku's.  There are currently 3 models of the 360 at 3 different price points and 2 models of ps3's at different prices.  While there have been limited bundles from time to time in the past, this is the first time that the big contenders have given the consumer so many permanent options.

So, when people talk about the xbox being at mass market price, thats only 33.3% true.  Then, you could do what sony did and cut the price of your old models as you introduce new models, creating an almost temporary price cut.

Fact of the matter is this, the gaming business is radically different this generation.  With the multi sku, uprgradable firmware, motion controls, and them wildcard casuals, I don't think historical context means as much this generation as it did in previous ones.

So what do you guys think?  agree? disagree?  What else do you think is different?  Lets discuss!!

Black Women Are The Most Beautiful Women On The Planet.

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

huh? I'm guessing you are trying to say wants there.
The least isn't always the best value, and consumers are more intelligent than you might think.  I know this is hardly a worldwide fact, but I know at my best buy we can sit on arcades for months before they sell, while elites and pro's fly out the door.

However, the point of my thread wasn't really to banter on what mass market price means this generation, but how this generation is different from former generations and how those differences can change how certain events can change console movement in comparison.

@Twingo....
Someone who wants a PS3 will take Jack Terentton's word for it....And not care about the price...Some how wants a Xbox 360 has to think How Hardcore of a gamer they are...

I don't think that is true either.  Both systems have huge potential and are worth their individual costs.  The only real difference I see at this point is that the ps3 forces you to buy add on's  with the system instead of seperate purchases.  However, both games have a great library and both appeal to hardcore and casuals alike.

There is no "mass market price."  There's only demand at given prices and market/price skimming.

Don't use terms just because others use them if you feel that they're wrong.
