The anime Monster also fit your criteria but it's a long series though.

Princess Mononoke (the one that started it all for me!)
Grave of the Fireflies (I'm not ashamed to say that it made me cry)
My Neighbour Totoro

I have yet to meet anyone who didn't cry for Grave of the Fireflies... so you are not alone! :)
