Forums - General - Was Jonah swallowed by a whale?

No, I was in a catholic school and even there they told us this was just a tale. You cant be eaten by a whale and puked later.

Did you make this thread just to make fun of my religion?

Thats kind of a cop out.  If I said I believed in something that is opposed to reason, like that Obama would shit gold bricks and that would get the economy back on track, you would make fun of me.  But if I say, but thats my religion, I get a 'its okay to think anything' card.

But you created this thread for the sole purpose of insulting others' beliefs. And, your little "belief" is easily disprovable and Jonah is not. Are you familiar with the Flying Spaghetti Monster?

Well, there is no way that I can answer that. I can say what it says in the bible, and you will just say "yeah, sure".These threads no one wins. I will not convince you of anything, and I will just end up flaming

On Topic: No.

I'm actually just curious.  The kind of response I was looking for was from pastro, and I would hope all people of all beliefs treat their religious beliefs with the same scrutiny and thought processes that we use in everyday life.

If you think asking someone if 'Moses split the Red Sea' or 'Jesus was the Son of God' is offensive, you're admiting that believing in such a thing is negative and something you should be offended for.

From what I've heard, this is a matter of mistranslation, just like how killing poisoners somehow got transformed into killing witches.

There's an old Aramaic idiom that to be preoccupied by a dilemma is to be "in a fish." The modern turn of phrase would be to be "in a pickle."

So at some point, Jonah being "in a large fish" for three days evolved into being swallowed by a whale for three days. It would be like me writing in my journal how I was really in a big pickle being transformed by two thousand years of copying and translation into "And woe betide, famousringo was transformed into an enormous cucumber." Language is a tricky thing.

I was referring to your "So you believe in magic?" statement. You said that just to incite responses. Heated responses. I was in no way talking about your question. I even said "On Topic" the next sentence to make it much more obvious I didn't mean the question.

So your entire faith, the way you live your life and see the universe, hinges on the fact that your Holy Book is infaliable?

I was in a catholic school all my life, but that doesnt mean I still believe, actually I had many atheist classmates, so I dont know if Im the case of a believer admitting something in the bible is false, although, when I did believe there were many things me and my friends considered to be most likely fake, like adam and eve, Noas boat(dont know how to say it in english) and other things that could be proven wrong.

Ah, I've never heard that before.  I wish there was a way I could read the Bible (or other Holy Books) and them inform the reader when passages are idioms or sayings.

My old church, and the people in it, weren't so open minded, which may be why I am so opposed to religion now.  When I was five, my Sunday School teacher was upset with me when I tolder her I wanted to be a scientist when I grew up, she said all scientists didn't believe in God and would go to hell.  Ofcourse, I would later find out that I was going to hell anyway for believing in black holes.
