Forums - Sony - Pachter: Playstation software sales will account for 31% of all games sold

The PS3 already has 32 million sellers, with GTA selling 5.65 million and MGS4 / COD4 selling more than 4 million. That's a good result for a console that was released in 2006...

Now it will most likely never beat Wii fit / Wii sports sales, the crowd of casual gamers is just too big.

What are the percentages so far?

31% of games sold from 3 different consoles. Congrats but that doesn't seem too impressive to me.

28 million - PS3

35 million - 360

56 million - Wii

Roughly, so far this year.

PS3 accounts for less than 24%

EDIT - Oops forgot PSP

12 million PSP

Overall I don't think 31% is that off, why did he make this prediction, its not exactly outlandish ...

I didn't ask for million sellers.

You have to consider all six systems that are still selling software, that's what Pachter is talking about. My rough calculations are ~25 % PlayStation, ~20 % Xbox 360 and ~55 % Wii and DS. The problem is that software sales are incomplete and the PS2 is probably the system which is the most undertracked. But still, Pachter's projected 31 % don't seem to be easy to achieve this year.

lol, yeah I forgot about the DS,

50 million - Playstation

35 million - Xbox

109 million - Nintendo

Those are the rough figures I got, (10 million for PS2, but as you said its probably undertracked)

25%/26% seems like a pretty good estimate.

Come this christmas, if there isn't a PS3 price drop that percentage will fall, PSP and PS2 are unlikely to do anything software wise by the end of the year.

There WILL be either a price cut, a PS3 slim, or GT5 released, most likely 2 of those 3, since Sony themselves predicted they would sell 13 million consoles, which doesn't make sense if they plan nothing special...

Because Sony always meet thier forcasts ....

No they don't, but they don't give unreachable numbers voluntarily. It hurts the share price a lot when you don't make your numbers big time. ;)

If they say 13 million, they're pretty sure they'll make at least 85/90 % of that total, probably more.

85% - 90% is 11 - 11.7 million, which sounds more on target if a price cut ect happens.
