Forums - General - United States Senate: Now with 100 members

Nearly eight months after losing to Al Franken, former Senator Norm Coleman (R-MN) conceded defeat after the Supreme Court of Minnesota unanimously rejected his claims. He had previously said he would appeal to the federal courts, and continue to deny Minnesota its constitutionally-mandated representation in the Senate.

Al Franken becomes the 100th member of the Senate, and crucially, the 60th member of the Democratic coalition. He'll be a reliably Democratic vote on most, if not all, issues, so the Dems now have an extra vote to break filibusters and pass their agenda. When the Senate returns to work, both sides are going to find the playing field looking much different.

Wow.. this is the first I'd heard of it.

Minnesotans were probably really pissed off not having full representation and the national gop were probably tired of funding this lost cause.

Seriously, Norm Coleman's political career is OVER.. he will never be elected to anything after pulling this.

Coleman may try to drag this into federal court, but he will probably be unsuccessful.

Franken's definitely about as liberal as they come, so it is certainly a boon to Democrats.

Democrats destroyed Republicans in the Senate in 2008. They went from 51 seats to 60 (including Arlen Specter's seat). And ironically Republicans will still be on the defensive in 2010 as they have more seats up for reelection AND have more incumbents who are retiring. Expect Democrats to gain a few seats or to hold onto what they have.

Expect Democrats to lose some seats in the House though (15-20, maybe less if they get a lot of big legislation passed), but certainly not the majority.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Coleman is a jackass. He was a sore loser, but he's GOP - go figure.

Can't wait to see the GOP defense force's spin on this.

Now, let's aim our efforts to uproot that cracked pot Bachmann. She's hot, but totally unstable - my kind of woman!

What, son, what? New York, New York!!!

Apparently Coleman is not going to take it any further.  I guess he took his own advice and will save the taxpayers the money:

ST. PAUL, Minn. -Republican Norm Coleman conceded to Democrat Al Franken in Minnesota's contested Senate race Tuesday, hours after a unanimous state Supreme Court ruled the former "Saturday Night Live" comedian should be certified the winner.
Coleman announced his decision at a news conference in St. Paul, bringing an end to a nearly eight-month recount and court fight over an election decided by only a few hundred votes.
"The Supreme Court has made its decision and I will abide by the results," Coleman told reporters outside his St. Paul home.

Damn I hate politicians, democrat, republican, independent, all of them,

It is a very rare thing to have one that is completely honest and is actually there for the people and not themselves.

Great that he won. Dems have been running congress for years. They have done such a great job, that I can't wait to see how much more great stuff they do now with the super majority.

I mean the economy that they are in charge of has been awesome!
