Forums - Gaming - Five reasons why NSMB Wii will completely crush its next best competitor

My hype for New Super Mario Bros. Wii grows everytime I see the game, instead of everytime I read about it. That's a good sign, because it means it'll probably be a good game.

Before Super Mario Galaxy, I always thought 2D Mario was better than 3D Mario, and maybe I still do.

This game will own everything. Neither Microsoft nor Sony has EVER stood against a christmas launch of a new 2D Mario. This holiday season will be armageddon.
2D Mario is probably the single biggest game series there is. Super Mario Bros. made the NES a succes and was only outsold by Wii Sports. Super Mario Bros. 3 extended the NES's life span and caused Mario Madness to continue. New Super Mario Bros. outsold Super Mario Bros. 3, even though it not being as good. Why? Because it was the first damn 2D Mario in 20 years or so. People want it THAT badly.

This game will not only crush its next best competitor. It will crush everything that's not with it.

Yeah, they have a lot in common.

You know, I can barely tell the difference, they are so similar!

Customisation, stickers and level creation are not boring. At least not to everyone. I happen to like them very much, and so do the other 2 million people who bought the game. So why don't you stop making up excuses that are visibly trolling?

Did I say they are visualy similar? Look, I won't discuss with someone that directs the conversation the way they want just make a point I didn't even discuss. Any side-scroler platformer will have its roots on Mario (until one proves me wrong). If you can't find any variable in both, there is nothing I can do and there's no possible discussion.

Oh, about the rest, it seems there are only 1,999,999 who bought it and like those new features, since I'm one of those ;) Oh... I also don't like the lack of proper gravity.

Why is it guaranteed? Because SMG sales are really low?
I agreewith you btw, I just didn't know there was strong evidence.

Trends of Mario games sales in Japan 2D vs 3D tend to show they have a preference for 2D Marios

Game Japan America Others
Super Mario Bros 3 3.84 9.69 3.75
Super Mario World 3.55 12.97 4.09
Yoshi's Island 1.77 1.68 0.67
Super Mario 64 1.92 6.87 3.1
Super Mario Sunshine   0.87 4.03 1.38
New Super Mario Bros 5.67 6.88 6.30
Super Mario Galaxy 1.04 4.15 2.79

You can see that Yoshi's Island sold very close to Mario 64 in Japan. Also for all 3D Marios, Japan accounts for around 15% of the WW sales but for Yoshi's Island and NSMB they represent 43% and 30% respectively.

Calling your opinions facts doesn't make them facts...

What? I provided numbers from VgChartz as to why I think that NSMBW is pretty much guaranteed to sell more than Galaxy. Also, you'll noticed I never said it was absolutely sure either because who knows maybe the game will be terrible!

I don't know about quality. It looks kind of like a dumbed down Mario Four Swords to me (dumbed down because you are allowed to skip difficult sections). I'll say it will probably deserve a 9.0 but more than that is overdoing it. Where quality is concerned, I expect Metroid: Other M, The Last Guardian, Uncharted 2, God of War III, Bayonetta, Brutal Legend, Fragile, Muramasa, Ratchet and Clank Future 2, GT5, Mario Galaxy 2 and others to be better.

I thought the feature allowed you to see how to get past difficult sections, not to skip them ...

The article I saw said you could skip them.  Anyway the original Super Mario Bros. or Super Mario World didn't let you see how to get past difficult sections, so I maintain its difficulty is dumbed down.

Seriously I do not see what the problem is. It´s an optional setting which means you can choose to use it or not to. So I say it´s perfect for both hardcore Mario players and beginners. What could be better? IF it weren´t optional then I would agree it would be a problem.

Braid and WittleBigPwanet > this.

And soon, A Boy And His Blob > this.

I expected nothing less from you. It has been over a year and it still hurts, huh?

You always bring that up when you have nothing to counter my argument, and that means I'm right and you're wrong.

Now accept defeat.

I would look at sales of Mario and compare it to LBP before you jump into this thread with comments like that lol

Actually little big planet will probably still be the better 2D game. But I do think the game will sell around 4-5 million. Do remember that this is a very old game, everyone in my school doesnt even know about it.

If not something goes terribly wrong with this game (and from what we´ve heard about it it won´t) then you are going to be very surprised indeed about the sales of this game. It is almost guaranteed to sell way more than 4-5 million copies. It will most likely sell a couple of million in Japan itself.

And by the way, this game is not an old game. It´s a new game which have old-school 2d gameplay and graphics but still l fresh and nostalgic in the way it echoes the old Marios.

The old 2d marios for consoles sure are many years old and it´s going to be exciting to see how well this one does compared to them. Nothing is for certain but I´m positive that there is a huge audience out there for this game. Just look at NSMB for DS. Most likely NSMBW won´t beat that game but it will still do very good. People love 2d Marios, I say 10 million + lifetime.

Pay no attention to me. I was just trying to annoy RolStoppable.

What we don't know is what this game will have BESIDES the main gameplay mode... What other goodies will Nintendo pack into this? I'm stoked.
