Forums - Gaming - WTF! how many?

How are console the same as PC, can the new 80 gig PS3 play games that the old 20 gig can't no. Its the same thing but with a bigger harddrive.

360 skus is what sucks, not by the amount of skus but they differences that affect games. One has hdmi, no harddrive, haddrive, harddrive and hdmi.

Yeah, consumer choice has been working sooooo well for the PS3 and 360 hasn't it? whenever I see somebody try to decide between a 360 and a wii they always say "Well hell, there is only one wii. Give me a damn choice why don't you! I think I'll decide on my hard drive size now!"

Consumer choice isn't a necessity of a product if the product doesn't need one. Consoles are not PCs. A PC, you can add more hard drive space for little money. A PC you can update incrementally, but that isn't the case with a console. You want more hard drive space on your console you have to buy the latest sku. That is why it's bad. You may know what you want with the current SKUs but in the next 6 months they might release something better for the same price you just paid, maybe even less. And if you want it, you have to buy a new console.

A console is meant to last for a generation, unlike a PC.
Thats how I feel.  I was going to try posting something like this, but you put it in much better terms.

I don't mind this personally.

However, I do feel it puts an end to any arguments that PC Gaming is some other planet that can't be compared to console gaming (I felt the argument was stupid in the first place, but whatever).

Thanks to multiple SKUs, consoles now have semi-regular, un-essential hardware upgrades. They have operating system updates. In the case of the PS3, you can even buy another hard drive for extra memory space.

So again, I personally think the multiple-SKUs are fine, I just don't want to see anyone arguing "PCs are totally different!" anymore. I'm tired of people ignoring PCs when its convenient to their argument (e.g. the 360 and PS3 have the best graphics).

The 360 and PS3 are about as different from the PC as they are from the Wii.

A PC isn't a Video game console and a Video game console isn't a PC, the two share certain functions and can even act as one another but they will always both be different in what they are. The two can obviously be compared when relevant but when the similarity is argumentative at best, the comparison falls apart and becomes little more than a convenient cop out for an argument supporting the connection just as you claim its a matter of convenience to deny the connection. It goes both ways, the situation has to be weighed on relevancy not tech specs.

Microsoft's models have clear distinction between them, but I think Sony's PS3 models are designed purely to reduce financial loss for Sony. You just have to look at how similar the hard drive prices are between 60/80 GB to realise that the 80 GB model is a pure money-maker...

In order to have a simple metric for what they want the consumer to think is the best product, they put in different hard drives, and what many people don't notice is that the 60 GB model is actually superior in terms of hardware (almost perfect PS2 compatibility as opposed to software emulation).

About the 65nm and Halo models, I don't think those should be counted. The former's just a normal evolution which happens in all electronic devices, and the latter is simply a limited edition for whoever wants it. It doesn't confuse anyone.

It's not a matter of confusion darthdevidem, it's a matter of getting screwed. It's easy to decide what you want now, it's a question of whether or not you can get a better one for less in a few months. You could buy one now and find out that you just got the ol' screwgie because now they have one for cheaper with more features and a bigger hard drive.

You can find me on facebook as Markus Van Rijn, if you friend me just mention you're from VGchartz and who you are here.

That's exactly the kind of thinking which will make it harder for the 360 and the PS3 to get mass market acceptance. Please notice that it's not about us here, it's about the consumer in general.
