If I hava a sore throat can it still recognise my words? Yes, Endwar has done this but this was designed for specifcally one game. Can this apply to all genres, across a wide range of games? Can developers optimise this software to create commands that can replicate specific actions that are difficult to perform simply by using a body gesture alone? Ex: Duke Nukem's 3d rewind feature, bringing up specific menus for spells, etc. And probably a huge barrier to voice commands: different languages. Now in addition to translating text and audio. you have to account for different language commands- in different languages. Costs also go up as a result This also creates more difficulties in importing as well, although this might not be as big of an issue- if you're that desperate to import you'll probably make the effort to learn the language as well. |
Obviously I don't know the answers behind those questions. Only Microsoft does at this point. Frankly, considering what I'm talking about are simple one or two word commands and not a conversation piece like Milo, it should be pretty fair to say it's doable to have voice commands handle pulling up menus. Like you said already, EndWar does it. If that game can do it, then why can't the next game? I'm not speaking about voice recognition playing the entire game, just some pesky little instances like pausing, pulling up the dashboard and opening and closing menus. Most of it would be universal and simply be provided by MS.
The problem people are seeing is how do you make it work for all genres? The answer is, you don't. You create software that makes sense for the camera, instead of trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. If FPS games don't work then just don't make them for it. If it's far better to create RTS, sports, fitness, etc. titles for it, then that's what you go for. Is this the end all solution for Microsoft's future control method? Probably not. It is a start though. If anything, having this built into their next console would do wonders simply for menu navigation, which is what's exciting me the most about it right now anyways.
