Forums - General - Life Imitates Bioshsock: Libertarians Plan Aquatic Community

I wasn't impressed by Bioshock's story, but they seem to have their fingers on the pulse of Randians:

a fringe brand of libertarians who have been planning to escape the iron fist of democracy by founding a new country in the middle of the ocean.

...

Seasteading is largely the brainchild of Patri Friedman, a libertarian activist and the grandson of famous right-wing economist Milton Friedman.

In an essay published by the Cato Institute earlier this year, Friedman proclaimed that democracy was "not the answer" for libertarians who wanted to live in true freedom because "libertarians are a minority" and thus "winning electoral victories is a hopeless endeavor."

Friedman said that seasteading was his personal solution to this problem because, "expensive though ocean platforms are, they are still cheap compared to winning a war, an election, or a revolution." Additionally, Friedman pointed out that "the unique nature of the fluid ocean surface means that cities can be built in a modular fashion where entire buildings can be detached and floated away.

...

The best idea, though, is to have a seastead dedicated to experimental medical research where companies will be free from the iron fist of the Food and Drug Administration, which "has historically been slow to approve new medical treatments." One presumes that this platform will be distinct from the other seasteads in that it will be populated mainly by children who have five eyes and no knees.

I know that a lot of us pretended to be Mario or Sonic as kids, but a grown man who gets delusions of grandeur after too much time with his 360 is just sad.

That's pretty funny. I imagine they will all start pissing each other off after about a month.

We had two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers…Also a quart of tequila, a quart of rum, a case of beer, a pint of raw ether and two dozen amyls.  The only thing that really worried me was the ether.  There is nothing in the world more helpless and irresponsible and depraved than a man in the depths of an ether binge. –Raoul Duke

It is hard to shed anything but crocodile tears over White House speechwriter Patrick Buchanan's tragic analysis of the Nixon debacle. "It's like Sisyphus," he said. "We rolled the rock all the way up the mountain...and it rolled right back down on us...."  Neither Sisyphus nor the commander of the Light Brigade nor Pat Buchanan had the time or any real inclination to question what they were doing...a martyr, to the bitter end, to a "flawed" cause and a narrow, atavistic concept of conservative politics that has done more damage to itself and the country in less than six years than its liberal enemies could have done in two or three decades. -Hunter S. Thompson

It would be awfully expensive and dangerous if the plan was actually set in motion.

And that's the only thing I need is *this*. I don't need this or this. Just this PS4... And this gaming PC. - The PS4 and the Gaming PC and that's all I need... And this Xbox 360. - The PS4, the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360, and that's all I need... And these PS3's. - The PS4, and these PS3's, and the Gaming PC, and the Xbox 360... And this Nintendo DS. - The PS4, this Xbox 360, and the Gaming PC, and the PS3's, and that's all *I* need. And that's *all* I need too. I don't need one other thing, not one... I need this. - The Gaming PC and PS4, and Xbox 360, and thePS3's . Well what are you looking at? What do you think I'm some kind of a jerk or something! - And this. That's all I need.

Well, doesn't sound brilliant to me... but, at the same time, I appreciate someone trying to achieve their vision of human society.  Especially when it doesn't involve the butchering of millions of innocents; it would've been better if Lenin, Mussolini, etc., had taken their loyal followers to live on a floating raft in the middle of the Atlantic.

Reminds me of Civilization Alpha Centauri.

That Pirate nation was always a bitch because you and like 6 other nations are fighting for 1/3rd of the planet while the pirates have everything else.

Sure you can make sea colonies too but they just outmatch you and can make sea colonies from the start.

Interesting. It's all talk. I imagine the chance of this happening is near zero. If it did happen, kudos to them. Hope it works out.

The medical experimentation part was a little scary though. Be great to get new treatments out that worked, but at the same time... it would be a system ripe for catastrophe.

I'm talking zombies, nuclear explosions, etc.
