Pure speculation (we all love a bit of speculation):
I recently read an article on from 1up regarding a potential MEGATON ANNOUNCEMENT for the PS3 that has so far been unreported and unspeculated link:
"Sony has been quite the leaky ship, to say the least. Nevertheless, it's managed to keep what our source calls a "MEGATON ANNOUNCEMENT" (yes, they used all caps) under wraps to this point, something that's apparently so big that Sony personnel have been "agog" since hearing about it.
We've done our best to get more details, but all we've gotten is a, "Let's just say that Sony has been such a leaky ship that the fact that they've managed to keep this hidden blows my mind," type of response."
What could this MEGATON ANNONCEMENT be? Brain whirling - EUREKA!
I remembered reading a newspaper article in the Times last weekend (a UK broadsheet newspaper with a pretty respectable gadget and cars pullout section. Jeremy Clarkson writes for it. it must be good).
There was an article about 3D gaming glasses developed by NVIDIA and on sale for a nearly extortionate cost. In this article they stated it works with most current 3D PC based games (except RTSs???), and although it sounds a little geeky and basic, there was an interesting line: "Console gamers might have to wait longer for their 3-D fix, but Sony was demonstrating 3-D versions of a number of PlayStation 3 titles earlier this year. Nvidia has proved that the required hardware does not have to cost the earth, nor do games have to be substantially rewritten."
Theres a link to the online article here:
I've had conversations in the past about how close we must be to developing 3D gaming for consoles. and i know there were some basic 3D glasses for the PS2, but something robust and awesome that uses HD. Just imagine - Killzone 2 in 3D. Its almost there, just look at the loading screens and how they move with the sixaxis. It seems tantalisingly close... or maybe its been designed like that for a reason...
It's probably not. But it might be. Knowing that the PS3 uses a NVIDIA RSX 'Reality Synthesizer' it seems very possible that NVIDIA have succeeded in this task. And knowing that the current PC version is compatible with current games, it wouldn't take much to make the back-catalogue of PS3 games compatible too.
Were all the clues there all along? all that apparent crap talk about 4D entertainment, and the long development times for exclusive games and the current spooky 3D design of current games... was this all part of a long term goal of bringing 3D gaming to the consoles?
Or am i just thinking too small... What is this MEGATON ANNOUNCEMENT [sic]? could it be 3D gaming?
