If you start with no save game from Mass Effect 1, you will have a game based on a standardized canon of what happened in the first game.

The characters' deceased status carrying over to the next game is great! Just the kind of thing Bioware would do first. I have to say, I'm more excited about Dragon Age though... guess I'm more a fantasy guy (or maybe because it's coming out first?) This will be amazing, though!
