Forums - Gaming - A real UFC Undisputed review from someone who actually learned to play 9/10

Do you think every fighter in UFC started in the Ultimate Fighter house?

No. The majority of them did not. You must seriously be a newb to MMA if you think that. EVERY fighter (excluding Brock Lesnar) started out in small rinky dinky organizations that most ppl have never heard of, and had to work their way up the ranks. That's what career mode should be like in this game.

Also - LOL@ Madison Square Garden being included in the arenas in this game. UFC and MMA are BANNED in NYC and have NEVER been to Madison Square Garden.

So why did they include this in the game? Because MSG is in the WWE games IIRC. I might be wrong as I havent played too many WWE games recently, but if I'm right.... that REALLY shows how lazy the developers were for this game.

your complaints about the game are really shallow.

so what if the career path doesn't include those "other" ways? you're giving a game 5.5/10 for that?

and you're complaining about the inclusion of the greatest arena on earth? what's the point? if anything, we should be thanking THQ for actually giving us a chance to experience that arena with MMA.

So... they're lazy for including an arena..?

Cmon man, lets talk about the gameplay. the gameplay is great. those little nitpicks and complaints you're making have nothing to do with how good the game is.

Being a Counter Puncher is really impossible considering YOU CANNOT BOB AND WAVE TO AVOID PUNCHES, and YOU CANNOT PARRY PUNCHES!

Sure, maybe to a casual MMA fan, you might THINK you can be a counter puncher... but you really are not. REAL counter punchers rely on head movement and parrying. You cannot do either of those in this game.

No... Theyre lazy because they copy & pasted Madison Square Garden out of the WWE game and put it into a UFC game, even though UFC HAS NEVER BEEN TO MSG!

It takes away from the realism and is an insult to the intelligence of a hardcore MMA fan.

Your main three complaints seem to be:
1) Cosmetic shortcomings: not enough animations, limited character customization, etc. Okay, fair enough. These are pretty subjective limitations though, and, while annoying, don't really detract from the gameplay itself...

2)You consider the gameplay too limited/easy/straightforward. Okay, as everyone has said (and as I've read in the handful of professional reviews I skimmed), this game is incredibly broad and deep: so much that there is NO WAY that you can have scraped the surface of all the pugilistic options available to you in just one day.

3)The game isn't exactly like real UFC in every obscure detail. Whatever, who cares. This is a game, that's real life. Different spheres. Games are not meant to be 1:1 mirrors of reality. Call it poetic license, call it laziness, but whatever: it does not detract from the experience unless you're a dedicated fan.

To be fair I don't own the game and am not a huge UFC/MMA fan, but I've been playing it with my friend the past few days and so far have enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed Fight Night the first time I played it (round 2).

Crusty VGchartz old timer who sporadically returns & posts. Let's debate nebulous shit and expand our perpectives. Or whatever.

tap your right analog stick. see man, that's one thing you aren't doing yet you're complaining it's not there.

if you tap it forward, you'll actually do a quick step and crouch low.

if you tap it back, you'll do a quick back step.

if you tap it up, you'll do a sidestep up.

if you tap it down, you'll do a sidestep down.

YOU CAN AVOID PUNCHES IN THIS GAME IF YOU LEARN HOW.

so?

does it make your gameplay worse?

seriously man.. your complaints are already getting really dumb. so you're telling me that the game sucks because THERE'S A SPECIAL ARENA INCLUDED?

are you freaking serious?

cmon. talk about the gameplay. don't put in stupid nitpicks like that.

every MMA fan WANTS the UFC to go to madison. is it a crime for THQ to have put it there? we should be freaking thanking them for actually including it!

I think 9/10 is a little more realistic.

I have to go for the night.

Sorry Buggrimmar, but we are going to have to agree to disagree here. I respect your stance and the fact that you came at me in a respectable way, unlike most kids at these forums. But my opinion stands. Theres way too many faults in this game. Both in gameplay, and design.

I just want an honest answer for this. How long have you been watching MMA, and how big of a fan are you? Have you ever practiced MMA?

Because I think that's what the difference is here. I've been watching UFC for over 15 years and practiced in Muay Thai and a little bit in grappling. Im not trying to come across as arrogant because of that, but I truly think this game has a lot of faults that hardcore MMA fans will not like, but casual MMA fans (I'm guessing you are one of them) won't even notice.

Check out this thread if you havent already. It's at an MMA forum... and theyre tearing this game apart as well.

Again, if you're casually an MMA fan... I can see why you'd enjoy it. Me personally? This is not a MMA Simulator. This is a WWE game with UFC characters and an octagon.

I KNOW. I have done the tutorial.

Sidestepping and bobbing and weaving, and parrying are all very different.

What if I want to avoid a strike without losing my position in the cage? Can't do it in this game. Have to side step and lose position, possibly putting me with my back to the cage. What if we're up close and the other guys is jabbing non-stop? Can't parry those jabs.

actually, you can.

1.) i made a typo there. actually it's your left analog stick that lets you avoid strikes.

2.) your right analog stick enables you to quickly clinch up or take down an opponent. there is a move that will have you catch the guy's hand or foot if you just flick the right analog stick up or down. while standing, if you flick it up while your opponent tries to punch you in the face, you will catch his arm and quickly clinch up on him if you time it right, resulting in double underhooks for you. if you flick it down during a low kick, you'll quickly take him down.

so there it is:

YOU CAN AVOID, COUNTER, SMOTHER, and even STOP STRIKES from happening, IF YOU LEARN THE GAME.
