Sony Pictures CEO: Nothing Good Has Come From The Internet

from the and-that-is-why-you-fail dept

We were just talking about how Sony CEO Howard Stringer was lamenting the fact that Sony didn't embrace openness and new technologies like the internet earlier. Perhaps part of the problem is the execs who work under him. Mathew Ingram points out that at a recent panel discussion the CEO of Sony Pictures, Michael Lynton, said: "I'm a guy who doesn't see anything good having come from the internet. Period."

Perhaps that explains why you're failing to figure out how to embrace it?

I recently wrote up something for Open Forum talking about how every threat is really an opportunity. A threat just means that someone else may have figured out how to serve your customers/community better. That should be seen as an opportunity for you to serve your community/customers better. An exec today who views those opportunities as threats, as apparently Michael Lynton does, shouldn't still have a job. It's bad for business. It's bad for shareholders. And it's bad for customers. Saying that there's nothing good that has come from the internet suggests someone so lacking in vision that it's scary he still has a job running a major motion picture studio.

Can't somebody fire the guy already? Sony is going to sink with people like him.

Around the Network

It's sad that he thinks that way.

Of coarse he is going to say this. Movies are downloaded like no tomorrow on the internet. It can't be helped and they should learn to embrace it rather than spend more money fighting it.

I only wonder how deep in the hole PS3 would be without sales of PSN content or if they ignored the internet completely.

I'd list all the good things that came from the internet, but I can't even count that high.

That guy needs a new perspective or a new job, whichever comes quicker.

Agreed. The good definatly outwheighs the bad. Just like everything else in life plus you can always take a bad thing and turn it into a good thing with enough perserverence and commen sense.

If I were a Sony fan, I'd seriously try to email Sony to get rid of that guy, LOL. I am not hardcore enough.

i have it in my sent folder:

dear sonny,

hello I decided that I should share my wisdom with you people on how the ps3 can win this generation. although i am glad you isnot winning for gimmicks this time and nintedo is back i feel like I should be the stronger person and give sonny some advice. here is my plan to skyrocket the ps3 back into the limelight

-they should make a ps3 called ps3i which is pronounced (PEE ESS THREE AI). it will be like a ps3 lite it will be 50% slimmer and 50% lighter. all other ps3 models will be cancelled. existing ps3 owners must mail in their ps3s to get ps3is

-it will feature no blue-ray just dvd playback
-my logic is that you can upconvert dvds to look like blue-rays right? so the games will just upconvert dvds to look like blue-rays so people can save on diodes.

-it will have a motion sensor bar as well as a redesigned controller (the psp can also be used as a controller which would drive psp sales)

-there will be no hard drive only sd cards (following suit with nintendo)

-there will be no more online, but maybe but you would have to pay for it for sure

-it will be able to play all existing ps3, ps2 and ps1 games as well as new games called ps3i games which use the sensor bar.

-it will be more family friendly and maybe the console would be red or something? definietely not black.

-it will retail for $199

This is my logic, well it would first be the cheapest console available and people would think hmm I want a ps3 now I can afford one! and why buy a wii? also think about it, people would have to PAY for online and PAY to use a PSP as a controller. think of all the revenue for sony. also please consider that the manufacuring cost would be so low. every ps3 sold would make at least $100 dollars.I hope I have provided a strong argument in my case . Please do not hesitate to reply with any suggestions. you can use my idea only if you credit me.

This is my idea how the ps3 can win (even though I am more than happy with NINTENDOMINATION).GOODBYE
