Forums - Sony Discussion - A question about the PS3 playback capabilities

Hi,

I am seriously thinking about getting the PS3, but to be honest mainly instead of a DVD or Blu-ray player.

Can anybody tell me if it can play DivX movies? Also, do you think it is better than a DVD player? (The DVD player I wanna buy is in the same price range so, I guess that is not an issue)

Thanx, and please be specific, I might buy it as soon as this weekend so ...

edit: Obviously PS3 can also play games, but I would have to wait for MGS4 to buy my first game. Or maybe PES 2008 before that.

Nobody wants to help? :(

Nope. It can't play DivX/Xvid but as for Blu-Ray/DVD player it's a safe bet. Since firmware 1.8 PS3 upscales dvd movies to 1080p - obviously it doesn't look as good as real HD but believe me it looks way better on LCD than standard DVD quality.

DivX movie ==> no, I dont think so, only play original movie.

DVD player ==> a lot better du to the good upscaling capacity.

I'm sure others know it better than me

Time to Work !

No divx, but if you re-encode to x264 in a .mov/.mp4 it'll happily play.

(There are rumours of Divx coming to PS3, but that's all they are at this time, rumours)
