I am gay and I am not proud about it at all - why should I, anyway?

Yes, there are a lot of countries where you can still (legally) be killed for having sex with people of the same gender, but as I believe I was born like this, there is nothing I can be proud of.

(just like I think there is no reason of being proud about your nationality, it is not like you have achieved anything being born in a certain country)

What people can be proud of, in my opinion, is if they manage to stand for themselves and if they fight for there rights and have to defend their opinions and freedom against others...

But most gay people I see today don't have to do any such thing. They actually seem to enjoy provoking people and seem to feel proud and great just being gay.

That is not how I feel, though.

For me my goal is for gay people to be accepted by society as equals.

But when I look at a lot of homosexuals how they show themselves in public, when I look at "gay prides" and so forth it seems to me that a lot of the political sense from past decades has been lost.

As in a way that the goal is not to create awareness, but just to provoke people.

Also gay people want to have gay clubs, gay stores, gay this gay that. What for?

I think the goal should be to live as equals among equals and not to seperate oneself from the rest of society.

I actually also had a hard time coming from a rural area in Germany so I can understand peoples point in here if they say gay people are still having a hard time living a normal life, I really do...

But feeling pride...? I don't know, I think the word itself can have a very negative sound.

I just took a look at the free dictionary and here are some of the definitions:

1. A sense of one's own proper dignity or value; self-respect.

This I could totally support. If people feel proud in terms of self-respect, proper dignity.. .carry on! that is great.

But I feel that nowadays it is slowly turning more into something like:

3. Arrogant or disdainful conduct or treatment; haughtiness.

4.
a. A cause or source of pleasure or satisfaction; the best of a group or class: These soldiers were their country's pride.
b. The most successful or thriving condition; prime: the pride of youth.

5. An excessively high opinion of oneself; conceit.

With bashing of heterosexuals and some people really feeling the need to tell and show EVERYBODY that they are great and how super-awesome that is... and I really wonder... is that really necessary?

@sommernacht

I really feel for you, and your difficulties.
I do however beleive in being allowed to be who I am, and I will keep doing what I do, and trying to put the good word out, until it gets to the point when I and my partner can feel safe with one another wherever we are.
It wasnt that long ago that a black guy could get shot for holding a white girls hand in public. Some places gay guys can still get bashed for doing the same thing.

The world will slowly but surely catch up, and THAT is equality.

I am sure the totally out there queens at pride marches do much to scare people from our cause, but they can express themselves however they like.

Are straight people at fault for watching sports, going to monstertruck rallys or attending a strip club? if that is how they choose to spend their time, and it doesnt affect me in the least, then i dont have a problem. Why cannot I then go to a club, to meet gay people, and feel safe in an environment where I am not going to get my head caved in for making out with a random?

thats how I feel anyway!
