Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft's new console be cheap & effective designing to counter Nintendo?

when you say cheap, do you mean it'll be worse than the 360 in failure rates?

no, i dont think he means cheap like ps2 failure rates.  just inexpensive like the wii.

I doubt it. I think MS is locked in , via its big hitters like Halo and Gears, to provide a decent jump each console (much like a PC level big jump) so each franchise (and new IP too) can seek to deliver bigger/better graphics, particle effects, online experience, etc.

I suspect many 360 fans would be disappointmed if the next Xbox was a 360.25 and only allowed for modest jumps in game graphics/content.

But I could be wrong of course.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

I don't think that Microsoft will try to push the limits of console performance at the cost of taking losses on the hardware and pushing the launch price beyond the means of the average consumer again ... but this is heavily related to there being no benefit from it.

Around the end of 2010 you will be able to buy a graphics card that can render a game like Crysis at above 1080p at a framerate around 120fps at ultra-high detail; and by the end of 2012 hardware that can perform in this range will be very inexpensive and will use (fairly) little energy. When you start to consider the visuals that will be possible on this hardware at 30fps or 60fps it will be difficult to make a meaningful improvement on graphics beyond this level without 100 times the processing power.

This I agree with kinda. What type of console would be needed to make the jump to even run Crysis on max settings? An expensive one. Anything less I wouldn't even consider it. The HD Twins will last longer then consoles of the past. Perhaps twice as long, as HD adaption was slower then what people had assuped it would be. The machines were waay ahead of their time. like 2-3 years.

Also for once I must agree with selnor. The Wiimote is kinda gimped.

I think they will improve live and keep on doing what they have been doing.

It depends on the timeframe about how expensive the console would be that could play Crysis at full settings ... Today it would be too expensive but in 18 months time it would be not that bad; and in 3.5 years it would be a dirt cheap system that would be the "Wii" of the next generation.

Now, the Wiimote has fallen short of potential but the Wii MotionPlus seems to fix most of its shortcommings ...

its cheaper than the PSP and Dsi here.
so cheap it's a given.
