Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft's new console be cheap & effective designing to counter Nintendo?

Do you all think Microsoft will try to hit closer to a Nintendo-like business model next generation, which means no more high end experimental setups and more buying the best of what's available for cheap and designing something effective with it like Wii-like motion. That doesn't mean the console can't have nice graphics. Gamecube used this method I believe and was more powerful than the PS2. It's a matter of getting the right engineers doing their best MacGyver impressions.

Personally I hope not. After a month of playing the Wii, I absolutely say it's boring for the most. Galaxy is good, TP is good. Brawl is ok, and Mario Kart Wii sucks major balls. 98% of the games just suck entirely. I grew up on Nintendo, and they have destroyed Mario Kart into some casual all the family can play game. All the techniques and strategies we learned and used have gone out the window.

People may have been buying it, but even my dad and others I know are getting bored.

the 360 is already cheaper than the wii and bundle with 2 games and is sitill losing.

The 360 premium console.............. I repeat 60GB PREMIUM CONSOLE costs less than a Wii here in the UK. People need to get it through their heads that more people simply want a Wii compared to a 360 or PS3. I don't quite know how much lower the 360's price can drop but it's never going to match or beat Wii sales.

Shit a thought just occured.........why are people saying PS3 stands no chance against the 360? :/

if only other consoles had boring games that sold 15,000,000 copies plus [all I can say is some get bored easy and that sucks]

You must *really* hate the other consoles then. Better graphics never relate to "less boring", and they can only handle a fraction of the gameplay models that the Wii can...

Actually. 90% of the games Ive played the motion controls absolutely suck. Becomes tedious, and I wish I could just use a normal gamepad. Very unimpressed, but the tech isnt there yet. It's not completely accurate. Gun games for instance if you aim at the person on screen it's not aligned. The pointer alignes to the bar across the top or bottom of the TV ( depending on where you put yours ), House of the dead I played with that. Graphics do bother me to. It doesnt matter so much with a handheld, but on a 40" TV you expect much more for a brand new console. The wii just gets boring quick, thats all I was saying.

no, i think sony will and microsoft will continue doing what its doing.

I don't think that Microsoft will try to push the limits of console performance at the cost of taking losses on the hardware and pushing the launch price beyond the means of the average consumer again ... but this is heavily related to there being no benefit from it.

Around the end of 2010 you will be able to buy a graphics card that can render a game like Crysis at above 1080p at a framerate around 120fps at ultra-high detail; and by the end of 2012 hardware that can perform in this range will be very inexpensive and will use (fairly) little energy. When you start to consider the visuals that will be possible on this hardware at 30fps or 60fps it will be difficult to make a meaningful improvement on graphics beyond this level without 100 times the processing power.

when you say cheap, do you mean it'll be worse than the 360 in failure rates?
