Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft Agrees to Acquire BigPark Inc.

I bet...with the new ZCAM probably for the new Xbox, Sports games on the 360 are going to be absolutely massive. Basing off the demo zcam video, they would be, along with flight based games, the perfect games for the platform, and vice versa.

GOTY Contestants this year: Dead Space 2, Dark Souls, Tales of Graces f. Everything else can suck it.

Lemke suggested that his company's upcoming Xbox 360-exclusive game, which has been in development for more than a year, would be in line with what it had released before. Resulting from a fortuitous "meeting of the minds" between BigPark and Microsoft, the game is unlikely to be a typical product aimed at the Xbox's hardcore audience (no space marines here!), instead fitting in with Microsoft's "big push to broaden the audience." A casual, free-to-play title would certainly fit the description, if one were to speculate.

Though Lemke refrained from offering much detail, he confirmed that the "very new and different" title would be playable at next month's E3 -- and that it would break some rules. "[It's] pretty innovative in how it's delivered to consumers," he remarked. And if there's any doubt that the game plays a pivotal role in an audience expansion strategy, consider just what prompts a giant like Microsoft to purchase a Vancouver-based developer that's barely two years old. "It obviously goes beyond one game, right?"

This is what I thought when I saw the news.

Does smaller teams mean that they work on multiple arcade/casual games, or is it like Lionhead, where small teams do experiments to be used in a retail game? It sounds more like the first, since they have one free online game. But I'm hoping they do full retail games, since MS already created a developer for their arcade games.

Number 9 is very telling on what they will be working on with M$.

Doesn't mean anything really, apparently its made up of 50+ people, Remedy (Alan Wake) is 40+ people, Media Molecule (LittleBigPlanet) was a team of 30+ people, though they might be working in a "casual" title, I would say that if they've been working on it for 1 year, it's probably not a downloadable title, but most likely retail.

Anyone else think they aquired BigPark cause its a Canadian company and that they could take advantage of the currency exchange?

I wonder if they will be like Mistwalker? A small core team, outsourcing their big work to a pool of software development talent somewhere else? Like these people are the core designers but someone else does most of the boring jobs coding the games?

I think they will be similar to Rare.  They might develop some games, but will be used mostly by M$ for whatever new thing they have coming out.  Probably develop some APIs for external developers and internal teams to interface with the new thingamajig that M$ is making.  Also, provide some extra man power for external devs that need help.  M$ is actually quite nice in this regards as they are willing to bend over backwards with support for clients.

I am fairly certain that Rare helped a pretty good deal with the 360's\Live's APIs and the NXE and possibly XNA, so this new Studio will probably be used in a similar manner.  Then again, I could be completely wrong.

It doesn't make sense to take one dream team of varried game development/production talent and use it to make APIs. There seem to be a lot of chiefs in their makeup, which is why I wondered how they would develop games. Its not a big team like Rare, but they do have a lot of core talent/experience with games and big selling games at that.
