It's over: 3D Realms shuts down
by Cyril Kowaliski — 6:00 AM on May 7, 2009

After a staggering 12 years, development of Duke Nukem Forever at 3D Realms may have finally ended—but not in the way fans might hope. Late last night, Shacknews broke the story that 3D Realms quietly shut down because of inadequate funding.

Word first came from a "very reliable source" close to the development studio, but 3D Realms webmaster Joe Siegler later confirmed the report on the company's forums. Siegler's post explained simply, "It's not a marketing thing. It's true. I have nothing further to say at this time."

3D Realms technically didn't release a self-developed game after 1997's Shadow Warrior. However, the firm stayed afloat by publishing or producing successful titles like the Max Payne series and Prey, along with third-party Duke Nukem games.

Take-Two Interactive was supposed to publish DNF, but it told Shacknews it "was not funding ongoing development of the 3D Realms project." However, the publishing firm specifically noted that it "continues to retain the publishing rights to Duke Nukem Forever." Therefore, development could theoretically continue—or start anew—at another game studio.

Such a sad tale. Though it seems there may still be some hope that another studio will give it another 12 years of develepoment, or even better a release!

This was sort of to be expected. There was nothing coming out of the studios which made funds going in quite hard, unrealistic even. Still, I won't shed a tear for the loss of DNF

You 3d-realms bastards are gonna pay for messing up the Duke's financing!

But really, did anyone think this game was EVER going to be published? If 3-d Realms had been a front for a money laundering operation, I wouldn't have been surprised.

Still, I'll miss the steely-balled Duke. We barely knew ye!

Obi-Wan: I felt a great disturbance in the Industry, as if millions of fanboys suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.

This is actually good for the Duke Nukem franchise. Other games developers actually you know make games that actually get released...

fornever ...

i kind of consider this to be a case of euthenasia

Last year's game of the year turned out to be Silent Hill : Shattered Memories (online GOTY was COD 6).  This year's GOTY leader to me is Heavy Rain.
