You can say that you personally like some of them, fine, you can say that some enjoyed box office success and there is no denying it. But neither of these things actually make a movie objectively good. Personally my favourite VG adaptation so far is the Resident Evil series, and it is no surprise that they have made 3 movies in this franchise as they are pretty much the least bad of all VG adaptations I've seen. But under no circumstances would I call any of the 3 movies good movies. I enjoyed them for what they were, I had low expectations and they were met. Please, in no universe could Gears of War rise to the level of BHD or We Were Soldiers. The source material is simply not up to it. And Starship Troopers was not great, it was fun, but not great. A great movie needs plot, character development, quality script all that stuff. I'd love to be proved wrong about the quality of Halo, but I doubt I will. I have no doubt it would do well at the box office, there are milions of game fans that will see it because it is Halo. But if it's production cost is Spider-man 3 like (and suggestions is that it would be more) then even the game fans won't be able to help the studio to re-coup it's development costs. Halo 3 10 Million sales WW LTD. Lets be generous and say 20 million people have played it and they will all go see the movie, and say that 20% will see it twice at the movies. Even with those numbers and the fact that it would make it the best grossing VG movie of all time, the production budget necessary for the movie will mean it will make a loss. Ultimately that is why the project has stalled and may never get picked up. |
The first Resident Evil was a "good" movie in it's genre and did reasonable at the box office and in reviews. It did also get nominated for some smaller awards. I don't think anyone would ever consider a VG movie could be great until it starts to get the same investment the likes of BHD and We Were Soldiers. It's a fact that VG movies just get no budget, it's the same way comic book films used to be until Blade proved they could work. If you're looking to judge VG adaptations then first of all ignore all Boll films as they're crap and pretty much made as a tax write off from his investors.
IF, and its a big IF, they get this right, it could be one epic film
@ selnor: apologies for not writing clearly. At no time did I intend to suggest either that BHD or We Were Soldiers were great movies. In fact I don't believe I used the word great in connection to those movies. I merely said a G(e)oW movie would never rise to their level. Greatness was attributed to to Starship troopers by someone else and I was refuting that particular claim by laying some foundations to what constitutes a great movie. Sorry for any confusion.
@ slowmo: If you have to qualify a term such as "good" when describing the quality of a movie then the movie is not good. At best it is passably entertaining. And as a zombie flick it really isn't that good for even by the standards of that the genre. You have to go to the level of sub-genre to give it the descriptor "good for it's genre".
Yo-John: Yes plenty of people would go see a Halo movie. But that doesn't guarantee commercial success. You better hope this Halo: the Fall of Reach movie project gets decent treatment, because if it is made on the cheap it's goodnight nurse for any movie based on the story from the games.

Really really wrong, learn how to abbreviate. Gears of War = GoW

No I was merely highlighting that certain genres get panned by the critics regardless of their quality. You will not see many films from the horror genre at the oscars, you rarely see big blockbuster action films nominated either, an example of this is the fact Jackson had to release a entire trilogy of epic films just to get his best director award. If you want to judge movies by critics with an agenda standards I'm fine but don't have the nerve to say my opinion is wrong.
Resident Evil is a good film, it's obviously not got the dialogue or the budget of a epic modern film like Gladiator but it didn't need it. The term good for it's genre was to highlight that if you enjoy the genre then you'd enjoy that film. I don't expect fans of romantic comedies to like the film and vice versa in some cases.
Anal abbreviators get over yoursevles!!! Really who cares. I thought the whole abbreviation war between GoW and GoW was all a joke, but if people post about it after a mod has come on and threatened to shut down an otherwise good thread then they're taking it and themselves way too seriously. Let it go man!
Slowmo: If you want to say a movie is good IYO, then who am I to judge your opinion? But I read your post saying RE was good as claiming objective goodness for the movie not just personal like. Just because people who are into zombie flicks like a particular zombie flick doesn't make a movie good in the objective sense. A good zombie flick, like any other good genre movie, needs to be something special to be considered good in an objective sense. RE was nothing special.
Hence while it was my favourite VG movie so far, and I liked it (liked all 3 to a certain extent), I can't put it (them) on a list of good movies.
But let's say for argument's sake that RE is a good movie (just). It still does not bode well for a G(+/-e)oW movie given the number of attempts at making VG movies and there is only 1 that has managed to cross the barrier between mediocrity and goodness, and it skinned it's knee in the process.

Not it doesn't. God of War came out earlier and is the superior franchise. |
STOP NOW! I would like you to tell the world how God of War is awesome multiplayer. Do you also want to get into sales numbers?
By the way, I say this also saying that Devil May Cry has been supplanted by God of War.
The good thing is there isnt much story in the game so you can make up a lot of shit without stepping on the "cannon" that is the videogame. I have been collecting the comic and it is almost devoid of story as well. I know there is a book, which should have some kind of story, but Im even skeptical of that.
Bad thing is there is no one that could play any of the comically sized Gears with exception of Carmine.
Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.
