try DQVIII and all the playstation FFs, there are more RPGs that are like this games than kingdom hearts and tales

Since you are planning on trying RPG and give a RPG that has different battle system a shot. I suggest that you also try Persona 3 and 4, Suikoden, FF especially 12 since FF12 doesn't have random encounters, Mana Khemia, Grandia, Magna Carta, Rogue Galaxy, Dark Cloud 1 and 2, Tales of the Abyss. The list will go on and on so I'll stop.
