I have a question about the OP:
How was the story of Final Fantasy VII "more dark and mature" than the stories of previous RPGs?
Because I recall the intro of FF IV involving attacking innocent villages and burning them down, killing several innocent people, followed by a quest for redemption.
@everybody else, there is absolutely no such thing as hardcore. In any genre, in any medium, you get elitist haters who try to come up with special terminology for themselves so they can exclude others. griffinA posted a good example about hip hop.
Right now Hayao Miyazaki claims he makes "full animation" based on "moving images" while anybody who makes "anime" is making "limited animation" based on "still images." And he's an elitist prick who actually hates all anime, and even hates Tezuka. He has conveniently insulted everybody who does things differently than he does. He's basically claiming that his movies are "real animation" while stuff like Akira and Evangelion is "cheap crap," based on the frames per second, static backgrounds, and lack of depth. 'Cuz yeah, that's what makes cartoons fun.
In any genre, in any medium, we shouldn't let the elitist snobs who want to remain exclusive determine the terminology for the rest of us. Games are games are games are fun. And they're growing. And this is good. I hate Halo, but I applaud it for spreading gaming. If it wasn't for Halo spreading the mass appeal of shooters, I might not have gotten to play Portal. I hate FF VII, but I applaud it for spreading gaming. If it wasn't for FF VII spreading the mass appeal of RPGs, I might not be getting a sequel to FF IV in a couple weeks.
