wouldn't it be Coca Cola or Toyota as the richest company
Up until a few years ago, MS was sitting on over $30B in cash.
MS didn't pay much out in dividends, instead the company kept it.
Large wealthy stockholders (think Bill Gates & friends) have to pay taxes on dividens they receive as income. If a company does not pay dividens, the value of the stock goes up as it is sitting on a pile of money. You do not pay capital gains taxes on stock UNTIL you sell it.
Yet, today, America's leaders are reenacting every folly that brought these great powers [Russia, Germany, and Japan] to ruin -- from arrogance and hubris, to assertions of global hegemony, to imperial overstretch, to trumpeting new 'crusades,' to handing out war guarantees to regions and countries where Americans have never fought before. We are piling up the kind of commitments that produced the greatest disasters of the twentieth century.
— Pat Buchanan – A Republic, Not an Empire

Don't let the word Federal fool you. It's a company, not a branch of government.
