Forums - PC - Classic Adventure Games

As someone who grew up playing Quest for Glory, King's Quest, Police Quest, etc., I've been sad to see the genre as a whole pretty much die out over the past decade.   (Even more sad to see the current state of Sierra).

Regardless, I was curious if anyone know of any *current* publishers developing or releasing adventure games?  I know that AGP has released a few VGA remakes of Sierra classics, in addition to a game of their own, but I haven't been able to find much besides that.

Oh, and best adventure game by far = QFG2: Trial by Fire

Stop getting so excited about a Kid Icarus remake... the original NES Icarus sucked.

When you were saying classic, I thought you meant the text based ones that came prior to that... The good old Infocom games like Zork, and the series from Scott Adams.

For present day, there is Sam and Max for the Wii.

yeah the wii looked like it was going to be getting a nice group but that front has really chilled down (sad to)

Sam and Max, Strong Bad and Wallace & Gromit have all been published in episodic format by Telltale games and have mostly gotten good- excellent reviews. You can pick them up on Steam.

There are dozens of point&click adventures released each year for PC. Unlike in the 80s/90s, today most of them are developed in Europe, only some of them in NA. For LucasArts and/or Sierra fans like you and me most of the new games may not come close to our beloved classics, but some of the new games are actually very good.

Here are some sites which I visit regularly: http://www.adventuregamers.com/ http://www.adventuregamers.com/recommendations.php http://www.justadventure.com/ http://www.adventureclassicgaming.com/index.php http://www.adventure-archiv.de/ (largest ressource site I know, the main page is available in English)

I'm currently playing Ceville and I like it, next ones will be The Book of Unwritten Tales, A Vampyre Story, Sam & Max Season One and about 10 other PC adventures I recently bought (I recently returned to PC gaming after a break of several years because I missed RTS, building sims and especially PC adventures; these genres are still best on PC imo, although they're improving on console/handhelds).

Very promising upcoming adventures are for example: Jane Jensen's Gray Matter (hey, ex-Sierra! ),  The Whispered World

Some reviews for Ceville and A Vampyre Story to get you started:

So in my opinion the situation for good new adventures on PC never looked better than today - 11 years after the release of LucasArts' Grim Fandago (their last brilliant adventure), Sierra's last Quest for Glory & last King's Quest.

By the way: The Sierra VGA remakes by APG look very interesting, I have to check them out some day.

The genre that really dried up is that of textual adventures. Too bad, I regularly replay my old Infocom and Magnetic Scrolls games.

I'm giving OP this link http://adrianwerner.wordpress.com/games-of-2009/ because I'm such a exceptionally cool guy.

There's a separate 2009 Adventure Games list there with screens. Enjoy :D

The Wii has Zack and Wiki and Sam and Max.

If you want a new PC adventure game, I'm really enjoying A Vampyre Story. It is very old school adventure.

This thread is great! I had no idea there were this many titles for this genre out these days. Thanks for the links guys!
