Forums - Sony - VGchartz's Demon's Souls thread

The final entry in the Demon's Souls walkthrough video series is here to explain the intricacies of the World Tendency system, the impact of White versus Black, and some basic strategies on making the most of each.

This link was sent to me via Atlus Faithful e-mail, and it shows very well how the Tendencies work out and how it effects the entire gameplay :D It's great for those who are still with doubts on how that system functions ;)

@lestatdark

Thanks for the tips. I am going to do all the PB events but I thought I'd do all the PW first since it's much harder to go PW from PB. Anyways, does killing a boss while a Blue Phantom increase WT? That'd help a lot!

PS: Is Adjudicator's Shield any good? I'm currently using a Spiked Shield +5. Is it any good? Should I switch to the Flame Shield you're constantly talking about? I'm a mage build with a Crescent Falchion +5.

Helping as a Blue Phantom only shifts WT towards white by a small amount, which is around 5%. You'd be better off fighting human BP.

Also, I think I worded my phrase incorrectly before, sorry :/ You should do the White WT first and only then, go for the Black WT events, I just wanted to say for you to make sure that you do Black WT events before you go to NG+, since they will be very, very hard in NG+.

The adjudicator shield per se, used only as a normal blocking shield, isn't even average. It doesn't have 100% damage reduction, meaning 10% of enemy damage will still pass unto your Health bar, plus the Guard Reduction is only 50%, which is extremely low if you're going to start blocking attacks from harder enemies like the Red Eyes in 1-4 or the Black Skeletons in 4-1 or 4-2, plus it's main weak point it's the very low Fire Reduction of 10%, which puts it in the likes of the Slave Shield in the Fire resist department.
Despite this, I always keep an Adjudicator shield +5 around with me, since at that maximum level, it gives 8 hp/sec regen, which coupled with a Blessed weapon +5 and a regenerator ring gives you an astounding 18 hp/sec regen, so it's good if you want to use as a secondary setup in order to heal as you go along stages.

Spiked Shield on the other hand is a 100% Damage Reduction shield, one of the few small shields that has that. Also it's Fire resist is nothing to scoff at, being at 70%. The main disadvantage with the Spiked Shield, when used only as a blocking shield, is an even lower Guard Reduction, which stays at about 45% even if you upgrade the shield to +10, so you'll get constantly staggered by stronger enemies, and decimated on NG+ if you constantly block with it.
That being said, it's also a good attacking shield, which can be used effectively to ram your oponents with it if you press L2, plus you can equip it in the right hand, and another shield in the left hand, using the Spiked Shield only as a weapon. It also has a Sharp pathway, which could have been forged even at Spiked Shield +0, which could really boost the physical attack if you were a high dexterity character, given that at Sharp +5 you get an S boost from Dexterity.

And now we're left with the Purple Flame Shield, the second best shield in the game when it comes to Guard Reduction and Fire Resist. The first, when the Purple Flame Shield is fully upgraded to +10, stands at about an amazing 82%, meaning you can even block the jumping lunges from the Black Skeleton (in NG+ you cannot however, since that will still pass some damage to your Health, but not much) and you can pretty much block anything else, and your stamina doesn't even take that much of an hit, couple that with the Eternal King Ring for 2x Stamina Regeneration and you transform into a wall xD In this stat, the Purple Flame Shield is only surpassed with a Tower Shield +5, which has a Guard Reduction of 85%, but weighing in at about 30.0 lb, the Tower Shield is only for those extremely high Vitality characters, unlike the Purple Flame Shield, which only weighs 8.0 lb, which is a weight that every class can manage.
The Fire Resist stat is nothing to scoff at too, standing at 90%, which is pretty good and it's only bested by the Large Brushwood Shield, which has 100% Fire Resist, but lacks in the Guard Reduction department, standing at about 80%, even when fully upgraded to +5. Plus the Large Brushwood Shield weighs double the Purple Flame Shield, 16.0 lb, way too much for a light armoured character (I supose that with your mage build, you haven't invested too much in Vitality right?).

So, all in all, the best raw blocking shield in the game and that every class and every character, from low level to very high leveled characters can manage, is without a shadow of a doubt, the Purple Flame Shield ;)

You are officially the most awesome person in vgchartz

As I can have no control over the black phantoms invading my world, (only happened twice if I recall correctly) I think I'll stick to Blue Phantom helping against the Tower Knight (I have a 35 in magic, my Soul Ray + Ring of Magic Sharpness + Kriss Blade does wonders).

Thanks for the tips about the shields, I shall not waste my rare ores in the Spike Shield. But should I go for a Purple Flame Shield +10 or a Dark Flame Shield +5 for the Magic protection?

Finally what do you think about my Soul Level / stats (approximate - I just have to beat The False King to move on to NG+):

Soul Level 85

Vitality 18

Endurance 20

Magic 35

Strength 25

Dexterity 20

Intelligence 30

Faith 6

Luck 11

Well, there are particular stages in which black phantom invasion is more proeminent, mainly 1-4, 2-2, 3-3, 4-2 and 5-2. I've been invaded a lot of times in those stages, particulary in the 80 - 140 SL range.

You should go for a Purple Flame Shield +10, because even if you do a Dark shield + 5, it will still pale in comparison to the Dark Silver Shield +5 in terms of raw stats. The Dark Silver Shield is to me the best Light shield in the game, since it offers 100% Damage and Magic reduction, 70% Fire Resist (which is good for a shield not built for fire resist purposes) and at +5, it offers 65% Guard Reduction, which is not as good as a Purple Flame Shield +10, but it's way better than a Dark Flame Shield +5 which only stays at 60% Guard Reduction and only has 70% magical reduction.

Actually in NG+ I always kept three shields around, the Purple Flame Shield +10, the Dark Silver Shield +5 and the Adjucator Shield +5, and swapped amongst them in conformance to my needs.

Finally, those are some pretty good stats to start NG+, you're at an even higher Soul Level that I was when I started. Make sure you get Faith to 21 at least though, you'll get a Free Pure Faintstone from the Advocate of God (Female) if you have that Stat ;)
Also, Firestorm and Warding are your best friends in NG+ playing the role mage, you'll decimate through bosses and enemy ranks with those two :D

I didnt read your psot totally because I dont wanted yopu to spoil me : what is the best shield
but I still read your point about the spiked and the flame shield

I have used the spiked during 80% of my game, later the iron/steel shield but I finllay switched to the flamme shield at the end because of the very good guard break reduction and the fact that my character was finnaly able to use it (22 strenght+).

after making some upgrade I reached +6 and then it appeard another upgrade : DARK PURPLE FLAME SHIELD +1 : I took it for the good or the bad ...

I lost in guard break reduction (73 => 60) but I m getting a lot in magic block (dont remember the stats) and it alllows me to spend my "cloudstone" that I didn't use for the moment. I hope I made a good choice ...

@Libellule

It wasn't that much of a good choice :/ If you want, you can read my second reply to routsounmanman regarding the Dark Purple Flame Shield.

You can get another Purple Flame Shield, it's dropped by the Red Eye Knights in 1-3, but it's a rare drop.

is it good spell ? I only have 16 in faith and 15 in magic (2 slot open and 100mp) : just enought to launch it
