Forums - PC - Does Windows version matter when building a game PC?

I'd go with windows vista 64 bit.

erm, what's that 32/64 bit thing??

Since you don't know, I'll keep it really short and simple: if you want to use more than 3GB of installed system RAM, use a 64bit OS.

Just wait for Windows 7, it performs way better than Vista as Vista performs better than Windows XP and just run a virtual machine if you want to play any XP/98 only games. Thats what my next build will be like.

This is the most sensible answer.

If you have more than 2GB of RAM then Vista is fine, so if it's a specialty gaming rig it will run Vista no problems.
I find with my new PC that Vista is miles faster and more responsive than XP, haven't had a single problem with it at all. I'm sure I will upgrade to Windows 7 when it comes out, but that's not going to be out til the end of the year.

will vista support directx 11 or higher though?

i'm going to get my computer in 8 hours. i need a definite answer. xp or vista? i don't care about memory usage or whatever. i care about cost effectiveness. xp is obviously cheaper than vista, but will having vista give me enough performance to ignore the cost?

No, because your graphics card won't support it. DX11 hardware isn't until Q3.

wait for windows 7.

Check out my game about moles ^

go with vista x64 oem from newegg. there isnt a really big difference between xp and vista. since you have a gaming rig, the small performance hit by vista wont lower your frames at all. As the case of windows 7 beta, dont punkbuster will annoy you to death as both the cods dont work. But if you really want windows 7 get the release candidate coming may 5. The RC is extremely stable, and fixes many of the punkbuster issues but not all of it.
all in all get vista x64 home premium, and upgrade to windows 7 when it releases.

i finally decided on just xp 64. my brother told me of many horrific issues he has with vista, despite him having a gaming rig too. not really about frame rate or anything though, just about crashes and a whole lot of unnecessary programs.

Good pick, vista is not what those hardcore gamers would use over XP. Mouse in vista is laggy compares to smoothness in XP. You'll need alot more RAM in Vista than XP.
