Forums - Gaming - Recommend me some documentaries about video games!

This is merely comedy, but as an enthusiast of classic gaming, you'll get a kick out of it:

^^^This one is about the connections between violence in real life and in game violence. Seems to be good stuff.

Ooh I like how this one has the interviews set to video game music, but not as a joke.  It works surprisingly well.

And LULLLUZLUZLZ at the guy who accidentally said "Smash Mouth" instead of "Smash Bros."  He said "I've been playing Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Smash Mouth 6 or 7 years and I'm not tired of it."

And then thye used a Kefka laugh sound effect when somebody got fragged in an FPS.  This one was actually made by gamers, and not in a "hey we're wacky gamers on G4 look at our hot babes" style.  I like this one a lot.

You'll get a kick out of this one. It's a quick doc about the media and government watchdog backlash that happened after Night Trap for the Sega CD was released.

Hahhahaha, that one's really well-made.  I can't believe they had all that Night Trap blooper footage, which has convinced me I must own this game.  I haven't played it since it was new.  I must've been 9 or 10.  Good to know the government created a ratings system to protect me immediately afterwards.

Love the footage of Howard Lincoln saying Night Trap would NEVER appear on a Nintendo system.  I'd like to go back in time and show him Manhunt 2, licensed by Nintendo.

Yeah this was solid gold for every second.  Now games cost too much to be inspired by acid trips.  I think Katamari and Noby Noby Boy would've made those guys proud of the future though.

I remember seeing a documentary called "Rise of the Video Game" on the Discovery Channel. It was a 5 episode series, and each episode was an hour long.

That's the first part of the first episode. You can probably find the rest through links.

G4tv, before they became an general men's channel, had a really nice series called "Icons". If you google/youtube the name up (along with some other key words), you'll probably get something.

Yeah, I've seen the Rise of the Video Game bits. It was better than that History Channel tripe.

I've also heard good things about that (I think it's pretty short) Playing Columbine documentary. If you find it, let me know. I really want to watch it. That game fascinates me.

How about Gametrailers' Screw Attack (especially Angry Video Game Nerd)?

They seem to deal with some sort of history one way or another.

No stranger's wing shielded my face.
I stand as witness to the common lot,
survivor of that time, that place.
