Forums - Gaming Discussion - My XBox 360 vs PS3 comparison (mostly technical)

@ Slimebeast

Yeah, maybe in late 2010 we'll see a big PS3 game run it's shaders on the Cell instead of the GPU (something like God of War 4 probably). But in those days all the talk will be about the Xbox 3 and PS4.

Not instead, in addition.

1st and 2nd party PS3 games are already starting to take advantage of this approach.

PS3 Blu-Ray drive vs Xbox 360 DVD drive and movie playback

Interesting info:

Hitachi has developed a prototype four layer Blu-Ray disc capable of holding 100GB of data.
While companies such as TDK and Panasonic have previously mooted 100GB discs, they have always needed a specially developed optical head in the player to read the disc.

Hitachi, however, claims to have used a standard Blu-Ray drive optical head that's only slightly modified to allow it to read and write data across the four 25GB layers. It's believed this will only require a firmware update to make existing drives compatible.

The company is apparently working now to stabilise signal quality before considering a commercial roll-out.

The hardware manufacturer is also researching an eight layer disc that can hold 200GB of data but has encountered problems with reflections decreasing signal strength across the eight layers, which it is working to rectify.

At the time of going to press there is no word on when the disc will be ready for commercial release.

If you decide to quote me in your footnote, then please put the quote in context:

"But that would be a mammoth undertaking and involve a complete game engine redesign from scratch. Maybe 3rd generation PS3 (SPE optimised, harddrive caching and texture streaming enabled) first and second party game engines will start to perform at such levels."

The added context doesn't make your original assumption sound any less delusional, in fact it doesn't justify your assumption in any way. Anyone with half a braint stem would know that the game would have to be completely reworked to run on PS3 hardware - hence that statement lacks any sort of profound insight explaining your position and is thus completely frivolous.

Because of that, I think its just fine as it is. However, if you want it changed than actualy have the balls to post that on B3D. Really, all I'm asking of you is to defend your position by either coming up with a logical defense or addmitting how stupid it was to say that. I think the folks at B3D would be quite the litmus test, but maybe you know a better place to do so (SDF doesn't count). Really, I leave it up to you on how to defend that best; all I want to hear an actual explanation beyond the obvious. Maybe thats too much to ask...

Oh, and this is the thread where you claim I posted diagrams that twisted performance numbers to make them look better. That part was true, but what was false is where you claimed I beleived those diagrams. Lets take a look at the original post to learn something of MikeB and his poor reading comprehension, shall we?
I can post charts that slant and overstate numbers too.  EDIT; another funny pic that takes numbers out of context  Thats right, the Cell can write memory at 4gbs and read memory at a whopping 16mbs. Not a typo

The last pic is no longer available, hence my last statement doesn't make that much sense. Still, lets see how MikeB tries to defend his post in that other thread. I'm guessing he'll just ignore this post entirely.

EDIT; The quote is really jacked, but just go to page 4 to see the original, as well as how other people understood I was mocking his power point slides.

OK, I will do my best, especially considering you pollute other threads with demanding an explanation from me.

Based on developer discussions, it seems that currently developers have already been tapping well over 90% of the XBox 360's performance resources. That's why I don't think it will be possible for the XBox 360 to run games like BioShock, Gears of War or Halo 3 in 1080p.

The amount of additional resources needed to run a game with the same effects in 1080p instead of 720p is estimated to be about 60-100%. Current 720p games on the PS3 are only estimated to be scratching the surface of what is actually possible with a fully SPE enabled / well optimised game engine, well below 40% of the console's game performance potential.

Point of Clarification: 1920x1080 = 2.25 * (1280x720). Just so we're clear, you're stating that the PS3 has the potential to render 2.25 times as many pixels as the Xbox 360 with the same effects. Yes? I'm not debating anything in this post, just asking.

@ Entroper

FullHD is 1920 x 1080, 1080p is 1,080 lines of vertical resolution progressively scanned, so resolution can vary depending on horizontal resolution.

I asked for a clarification, and your answer is vague and noncommittal. :P

@ Entroper

I don't want to attach an exact figure, but what you read in sieanr's signature is my and some other people's general view, the PS3 is significantly more powerful than the XBox 360, but at some actions more so than others. But note that I also think that even the XBox 360 could have been pushed further than Bungie did with Halo 3.

Funny, you ignore the post directly above this one.

You know, the one where you completely misread something I posted and used it in an attempt to slander me.

But to the discussion at hand.

1. You're an idiot if you think those % figures are real. How the hell do you quantify "90%" of hardware being used.

2. % of power used =/= potential for higher resolutions - common sense

3. There are various bottlenecks in the PS3 design that will prevent very detailed games from being 1080p. You love to bring up a made up bottleneck in the 360 design, yet ignore anything along those lines with the PS3.

4. The 360 is actualy better suited to 1080p than the PS3, if it wasn't for the relativly small amount of EDRAM (aka, a real 360 bottleneck)

If you really want to impress me, post you're arguments on Beyond 3D. You have yet to give a satisfactory explanatin as to why you haven't done so, which is odd since you claim to frequent there.

With that out of the way, I'd like you to address this.

Do I have to pull up links to that thread?

As I explained then, and will explain now, I posted that link when you were posting BS diagrams yourself. To make my intent even more obvious, I posted, with that diagram, something to the effect of "I can post misleading info that takes things out of context as well".

Really, I dont see how I could have made that any more obvious and I cant see your "example" as anything more than a attempt to misconstrue what I said - probably in an attempt to avoid my other points. And all this comes from the man who claims flops is a great benchmark.....

Its not like you completely misread something and now look like and idiot

So, sieanr, let's try this again: does your continued silence on the subjects I named, the arguments I restated, and the statements I made at 06:06 09/24/07 in this thread in fact imply that you concede that they are valid and true?

Since I know you have been monitoring this thread until quite recently, and since you asked me specifically to name and state those things, I WILL take silence as assent. [edit: I don't demand instantaneous response, of course. Don't fear that I will declare victory without giving you plenty of time to see this.]
